Computer scientists often claim we don’t take normative positions, oblivious to the irony that most CS work contains a normative claim that’s unacknowledged and unexamined yet central: that whatever tech advance is being presented should be adopted and will make the world better.

Journalists: if National Insurance is rising from 12% to 13.25% it is NOT rising by 1.25%. It is rising by 1.25 percentage points. if you want to describe its rise in percentage terms, it is rising by just over 10%. It is a 10% tax hike.

MHRA estimates 4 people in a million who receive the AZ vaccine will develop unusual blood clots. Interesting to compare to another medicine given to a healthy population - EMA say if 10,000 women receive the contraceptive pill for a year they expect to see 4 excess blood clots.

I’ve voted in every UK election for the last 20 years, local and national, and have never once been in a line. Not even one person ahead of me – I just walk in and vote, every single time. (For reference, my town of 80,000 people had 43 polling stations at the last election.)

We have long lines for voting for the same reason we have long lines for major concerts: it's a rare event for which demand occurs all at once. This is why lines are worst in dense areas and poor areas--the only way to alleviate the queues is through massive overcapacity ...
