Retired BC fisheries professionals are asking the province why , with record low returns of Skeena steelhead & significant need for precautionary efforts, have spawner escapement targets been cut by two-thirds? @nathancullen @BruceRalston @thenarwhalca steelheadvoices.com/?p=3740

V concerning!! 😠 As returning Fraser River sockeye #salmon numbers dwindle, evidence of rampant illegal fishing "on a massive scale" is seen as thousands of rotting fish are dumped along the river 🐟💔 tinyurl.com/4s6w2usk
Bristol Bay has seen monster #salmon returns in recent years 🐟 while other regions in the PNW continue to see rapid declines as greenhouse gas emissions and an increasingly warmer ocean threaten many salmon populations 🌲🌿 tinyurl.com/8236vm97

Breaking News! @wildfishNW have won their lawsuit against NOAA fisheries: Harvesting Chinook in SE Alaska harms #SRKW Southern Resident killer whales. Only 3% of SE Alaska's Chinook harvest is on fish from Alaska. The remaining 97% are from BC & west coast US states.

All Chinook harvested in the SE Alaska troll fishery are marketed as wild-caught Alaskan Chinook, even though fewer than 3% originate from Alaskan rivers. The other 97% originate from 🇨🇦, WA & Oregon, where they provide critical prey for endangered & hungry #SRKW @wildfishNW

New paper in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences: Atlantic salmon farms are a likely source of Tenacibaculum maritimum infection in migratory Fraser River sockeye salmon.
New paper analyzes patterns of molecular detection in sockeye salmon for the bacterium Tenacibaculum maritimum, known to cause disease in fish globally & to cause mouthrot disease in farmed Atlantic salmon in British Columbia. buff.ly/3FqDw4F
