This is the thing. We could implement a lot of the proposed (well-intentioned) solutions to gerrymandering, and we'd still have gerrymandering. And even if we DID somehow prevent it, our winner-take-all system is responsible for a lot of the problems we blame on gerrymandering.
Proportional representation solves the gerrymandering problem at its core. @imillhiser @voxdotcom vox.com/politics/507376/supr…

Congress is way older than the people they represent, and that's not likely to change dramatically after this election. Great visualizations here from Oscar Pocasangre @PolReformNA

I'm almost certain it won't be a single third party that emerges, but rather a new electoral system that allows multiple parties to gain representation and form coalitions.
And yes, it does start to feel inevitable. More polling: newamerica.org/insights/prop…
There are all sorts of procedural and legal reasons why the U.S. has been a two-party country for so long, and I'm not convinced that the rise of a successful third party is imminent, but ...
Well, let's put it this way: If and when a successful third party emerges in the next decade, people are going to pass around graphs like this in a "lol this is the most obvious development in modern political history" kind of way

This is exactly right. We’ll look back on the two-party system and wonder how anyone ever thought it would last

Working class Americans deserve proportional representation
“Of the 919 candidates running as major-party nominees for the US House and Senate this November, only seven had a working-class job when they got into politics.”
Nick Carnes and I explain why working-class people are numerically underrepresented.

🚨 1 in 10 Americans were used as political pawns in the gerrymandering wars between the two parties, according to a new report from @protctdemocracy. Proportional representation is the only ultimate solution.

What if more Americans want to change our elections than we think?🤔
🚨A new poll alert!🚨
50% of Americans support proportional representation, while only 24% oppose it.
But here's the really interesting part:
Most people didn't even know what proportional representation was. Only 2% could name it without being prompted.
But what does “proportional representation” actually mean?
Simply put: if a group gets 20% of the votes, it should have a real chance to win about 20% of the seats. That means more voters can have a voice in who represents them instead of elections where one winner takes everything.
The first step toward changing our elections is understanding that we have other choices.🗳️
