Took me too long to realize Janet’s ‘Greatest X’ totally follows The Dream’s ballad writing style. Once I heard an eight count of “yeah” in the beginning, I called out, “Terius!” I had to use his govt name because I know that pen from anywhere
it’s time someone say that yaeji’s raingurl is a perfect pop song. it’s nocturnal throughout, capturing two sides of a night out. her multilingual use of korean & english in the verse captures a melancholy that haunts the song from the intro; the chorus: total euphoric lift
The melodic structure of Janet Jackson’s ‘better days’ makes it one of the best closers for a pop album. The verses, prehook, and chorus all have a distinct melody that moves the song from melancholy to awakening to unabashed hope. Janet’s transformation is lyrical & musical
The melodies on Tinashe’s ‘I’d Rather Be Alone’ are so Destiny’s Child coded. They keep finding the pocket mid-verse and pivoting right where revelation meets release. It’s as emotionally stunning as it is musically
