Wendy Mseleku (1973 – 2000) was a highly celebrated South African singer and actress. Affectionately nicknamed "Powerhouse" for her remarkably commanding vocals, she made significant waves in the late 1990s as a prominent solo artist and collaborative backing vocalist. Born in Lamontville, Durban, she came from an esteemed musical family. Her father, Langa Mseleku, was deeply involved in music, and her uncle, Bheki Mseleku, was an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist. She was discovered and trained by the famous playwright Mbongeni Ngema, which led to her featured role in the iconic 1992 musical drama film Sarafina!. Her career was launched commercially by composer Shaluza Max. She released her debut album, Umgenandlini, followed by her second album, All in One. She received heavy radio airplay for her popular cover of Brenda Fassie's "Life is Going On". She was an early member of the powerhouse gospel ensembles Family Factory and Joyous Celebration. Additionally, she lent her backing vocals to international icons such as Billy Ocean and Angélique Kidjo, and teamed up with Bob Mabena and Doctor Khumalo on the track "Get Funky

Yesterday I walked downtown Jozi and enjoyed a terrific new play, Shockwave @MarketTheatre.
It's a compact and captivating history lesson on living live and resisting bigotry in South Africa under the haunting shadow of empire, apartheid violence and Christian fundamentalism. I highly recommend it. Salutes!👌

A poem by Alice Walker
Winnie Mandela
We love you.
If we had known you
In a time of peace
We would have loved
Your peacefulness
Your quiet so deep
It did not hear
The call
To fight.
We missed our chance.
Winnie Mandela
We love you.
In a time of war
We love your ferocity.
We love your vigilance.
We love your impatience
With killers
And charlatans.
We love your hatred
Of the deaths of our people.
We love your hatred
Of despair.
Winnie Mandela
We love you.
We love your beauty.
We love your style.
We love your hats,
Scarves
And various lengths
Of hair.
We love the passion
In your body.
The fury in your eyes.
When you smile
We are amazed.
We love your loyalty
To Nelson
The beautiful.
Your attention to
The children
And the voluptuousness
Of the countryside
Which will be ours
Again.
We love your memory
Of details.
We love that you do not intend
To forget.
Winnie Mandela, “Lucy,”
We love you
For helping us recognize
The eternity you’ve been with us before.
Winnie Mandela, Sister,
We love you.
Yours is the contemporary face
Of the mother
Of the human race.
