🌾 DIVERSIFARM India Project Milestone 🌱
The DIVERSIFARM India initiative—led by the Fridtjof Nansen Institute (Norway) and the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (India)—has launched a major resource for seed sovereignty in India.
📍 On 8th September, the team unveiled the National Digital Platform for Community Seed Banks:

This interactive atlas currently features data from 295 CSBs across India, with updates from 800+ CSBs underway. The platform is designed to connect seed banks, support organizations, and networks to foster collaboration and strengthen farmers’ rights in conserving traditional seed varieties.
💬 On the same day, a seminar titled “Community Seed Banks: What Are the Factors Making Them Succeed?” was held at the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The event brought together over 30 NGOs and CBOs to discuss findings from five model CSBs and explore strategies for scaling successful approaches.
🔍 Presentations from the DIVERSIFARM-India team highlighted insights from fieldwork in Odisha, a state recognized for its pioneering role in seed conservation. The seminar featured a panel co-chaired by Dr. E.D. Israel Oliver King (MSSRF) and Dr. J.C. Rana (Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT), with contributions from government and research institutions.
🎯 Discussions focused on:
- Strengthening policy and institutional support
- Balancing genetic diversity with farmer-preferred varieties
- Preserving the collective spirit of CSBs while exploring commercialization
The seminar marks the beginning of a broader process to build capacity and scale CSBs in Odisha and beyond. Insights will be shared nationally in 2026, contributing to a resilient and inclusive agricultural future.
DIVERSIFARM India continues to champion Farmers’ Rights, as recognized in the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, positioning India as a global leader in agrobiodiversity conservation.
