EGYPT’S BLASPHEMY LAWS: A WEAPON TO SILENCE CRITICISM OF ISLAM
In Egypt, criticizing Islam can cost you your freedom. Question Muhammad, challenge the Quran, expose contradictions in Islamic teachings, or publicly reject Islam, and you risk being prosecuted and thrown into prison.
Don’t believe me? Here are some names:
• Sherif Gaber: An atheist YouTuber sentenced to five years in prison in 2024 for criticizing religion and promoting atheism.
• Karim Amer: Sentenced to four years in prison in 2007 for criticizing Islam and religious institutions.
• Albert Saber: Sentenced to three years in prison in 2012 over accusations of insulting religion.
• Marco Girgis: A Coptic Christian sentenced to five years in prison over images considered offensive to Islam.
• Augustinos Samaan: A Coptic Christian YouTuber sentenced to five years in prison in 2026 over videos defending Christianity and discussing Islam.
• Yusuf Saad Hanin: A Coptic Christian soldier sentenced to three years in prison over statements about Islam in a private conversation.
NOW LOOK AT THE HYPOCRISY.
In 2017, Salem Abdel-Gelil, Egypt’s former Deputy Minister of Religious Endowments, publicly declared that Christianity was a “corrupt belief”, called Christians infidels, and said they were destined for hell.
Was he thrown into prison? NO.
More recently, a Salafi YouTuber declared:
“Islam is the only religion. Everything else is trash, paganism, and polytheism.”
Imagine a Christian YouTuber declaring that Islam is a corrupt religion, that Muhammad was a false prophet, and that the Quran is nothing but religious garbage.
How long would it take before someone filed a blasphemy complaint against him?
THIS IS THE DOUBLE STANDARD.
They tell you Egypt’s blasphemy laws protect Islam, Christianity, and Judaism equally.
But look at who ends up behind bars.
If Islam is the truth, why does it need prosecutors to defend it?
If Muhammad was a prophet, why should questioning his claims be a criminal offense?
If the Quran is the word of God, why should criticizing it land someone in prison?
Truth does not need prison guards. Ideas that cannot survive criticism do not deserve legal immunity from it.
