The Autonomous Age: The 5th Industrial Revolution A Manifesto We find ourselves in a world where machines not only work for us but think for us. A world where our tools—our capital—operate independently, making decisions that propel humanity into an era of unimaginable abundance. This is not a distant dream. This is the dawn of the Autonomous Age, the 5th Industrial Revolution. And it will redefine what it means to be human in ways no previous era has dared. The Steam Age. The Electricity Age. The Nuclear Age. The Information Age. Each marked a turning point. Each lifted humanity higher—unlocking productivity, raising standards of living, and reshaping the world. But none touched the core of our humanity. A humanity that was defined by mixing labor with capital goods and the earth to survive and advance in a world of extreme scarcity. The Autonomous Age will change the very nature of humanity and society. We stand on the threshold of an era where capital—not mere money, but the tools, machines, and systems we depend on—is becoming autonomous. Powered by artificial intelligence, these systems will think, adapt, and act without human hands guiding them. This is not automation as we’ve known it. This is autonomy. This is the liberation of capital itself. The Legacy of the Past The Steam Age mechanized labor. Electricity lit our homes and fueled our factories. The Nuclear Age split the atom and brought us to the brink of apocalypse. The Information Age brought the entire globe together in ways previous generations only could dream of. Each revolution built on the last, delivering prosperity to billions. But the Autonomous Age is different. It doesn’t just enhance our tools—it redefines our place in the world. For the first time, we take a step back as the primary decision-makers. Our machines are actively being handed the reins, unleashing productivity beyond anything history has witnessed. This shift will shatter the limits of economic growth and challenge us to reimagine our purpose in a world where labor no longer defines us. How Humanity Will Change The Autonomous Age will weave a new tapestry of human life: Work evolves. Repetitive tasks—flipping switches, or filing forms, and even many complex tasks such as designing skyscrapers—will vanish into the hands of autonomous systems. Jobs will shift to creative frontiers: solving complex problems, guiding the ethics of AI, and fostering human connection. We’ll become curators of meaning, not laborers in toil. Education transforms. Schools will have to pivot from rote learning to cultivating creativity, emotional intelligence, and adaptability—skills that machines likely won’t mimic. The question “What should we build next?” will matter more than “How do we build it?” Communities flourish. Freed from the grind, we’ll have time for art, relationships, and personal growth. A farmer might spend his days teaching his son or daughter a sport, going fishing, reading or writing a book, taking his wife to the movies. Abundance will give us the space to live, not merely survive. This is not an abstract prediction. This is a future we can see, taste, and touch—if we shape it right. The Promise of Abundance Autonomy will rewrite the rules of scarcity: Food will grow so plentiful that farmers may give it away, funded by new models of exchange, such as wrapping it in packaging that has ad space. Housing will multiply, as autonomous systems slash construction costs and optimize land use, making homes affordable again. Energy will flow cleaner and cheaper, with AI-driven grids harnessing fossil fuels, nuclear and renewables at scale with maximum efficiency. These are far from pipe dreams—they’re the natural outcomes of a world where capital never sleeps, never falters, and never stops producing. But abundance is meaningless if it’s in a walled garden. We must ensure it reaches every hand, not just the well connected and privileged. The Coming Demand When writing this, the top 6 Large Language Models alone handle roughly 2 billion inference requests per day. That’s only ¼ of a request per person on earth per day. If you do not see that number increasing exponentially, by multiple orders of magnitude, in the coming months and years, you must not be paying attention. It is not hard to imagine a world where that number grows by 1000x. Leading to a world where demand for inference requests is on the order of 2 trillion per day, or 250 per person per day. As we envision a world in which the workforce is augmented by artificial intelligence and agentic workflows, where devices require intelligence for decision making, and where mundane personal tasks such as household bookkeeping, planning, taxes and online shopping are driven by agents, we can visualize the number of requests going vertical. There are some critical shortcomings today, however. There is simply not enough compute to fulfill such a world, and the incumbents know this. The model providers, the hyperscalers, and the neo-clouds want to acquire hundreds of billions of dollars worth of GPUs, oligopolize the inference industry, and build walled gardens, where you will then be dependent on them for your ability to survive. We won’t have it. We must resist this trajectory, and chart a different course forward for humanity. One in which compute ownership, geographic placement, and accessibility is distributed, competitive, market driven and allocated to the highest and best use. We must build antifragile compute grids, free from the influence of local political tensions, and resistant to geopolitical strife. We must build protocols that grant permissionless market rate accessibility to anyone who desires access to this revolutionary technology. Less we find ourselves in a new feudalism, where the AI lords have domain over the most critical tool mankind has ever devised for abolishing poverty. The Challenges We Face This revolution is not without peril. We stand at a crossroads: Jobs will vanish, uprooting lives and testing our resilience. Centralized powers will attempt to hoard the gains, leaving billions in the shadows of plenty if we allow them to succeed. Ethical questions will loom as machines take on choices once ours. These are not reasons to retreat. They are reasons to act. The Autonomous Age can liberate us—or divide us. The difference lies in the systems we build today. You and I need to use whatever we have at our disposal to craft the future we want to live in, and there is no time to procrastinate, we must start now. This is our moment. You and I—we—hold the power to steer the Autonomous Age toward freedom, openness and abundance. Here’s how: 1. Fight for open-source AI and decentralized ownership. Demand, use and invest in systems that are transparent, verifiable, and free from corporate cages. 2. Rethink education. Push for curricula that prize creativity and ethics over obsolete skills. 3. Embrace blockchain and tokenization for distributed ownership and verifiability. 4. Use these tools to democratize the capital goods—energy grids, AI networks, compute clusters, orchestration protocols—that will define tomorrow. Build unstoppable systems. Create protocols and payment rails that are open, fair, and accessible to all including autonomous systems and agents, so that agents can thrive in a transparent world. We already wield mighty tools: cryptocurrencies to redefine money, tokenization to share ownership, blockchains to ensure trust. But tools are nothing without action. The Path Ahead Do not fear this change. You are here, at this hinge of history, to build a world that’s free, open, and transparent. We are in the Autonomous Age. And while it is not a promise of utopia—as utopia is a horizon that recedes as we approach. It will move humanity forward. Lifting even the most downtrodden among us to a life of dignity, opportunity, meaning and hope. Purpose will bless the lives of the more privileged. The future isn’t coming—it’s here. And it will be shaped by those who dare to build. -@Cryptonomikhan

US natl and economic security rely on our leadership in AI. We need more energy & compute. And we need to allow our chips & open source models to compete around the world to avoid a Chinese AI belt & road. Time to de-regulate, build & accelerate! 🇺🇸🚀
America’s leading AI companies are all reporting that demand is off the charts — so much so that they are being forced to impose rate limits. Fortunately a massive new infrastructure build-out is already underway thanks to President Trump. He is unleashing American energy, making permitting easier, and attracting huge new investment projects. The Golden Age of American AI is just getting started!

TL;DR: we are excited to release a powerful new open-weight language model with reasoning in the coming months, and we want to talk to devs about how to make it maximally useful: openai.com/open-model-feedba… we are excited to make this a very, very good model! __ we are planning to release our first open-weigh language model since GPT-2. we’ve been thinking about this for a long time but other priorities took precedence. now it feels important to do. before release, we will evaluate this model according out our preparedness framework, like we would for any other model. and we will do extra work given that we know this model will be modified post-release. we still have some decisions to make, so we are hosting developer events to gather feedback and later play with early prototypes. we’ll start in SF in a couple of weeks followed by sessions in europe and APAC. if you are interested in joining, please sign up at the link above. we’re excited to see what developers build and how large companies and governments use it where they prefer to run a model themselves.

Inference demand is exploding - Jensen says about to 1 billion X as the result of agents & reasoning models. The new hot thing - dedicated, at scale inference clouds with custom silicon to help the largest consumers of tokens help meet that demand - fast & cheap. 🇺🇸🔥
A few weeks ago @cerebras announced that we be deploying our CS-3s in new data centers across the US. Below is a pic of our massive new deployment in Minneapolis. Serving inference from US based data centers at hyperscale capacity is the goal.
