How many tokens does it take to capture the gist of an image? Introducing GIST: an image tokenizer that learns to preserve what matters and chooses how many tokens each image needs, in one forward pass. Now on arXiv 🎉🎉 arxiv.org/abs/2610.15515 Demo: ddgoede.github.io/gist-token…

Besides scalability, self-supervised learning is attractive because we have a good real-life example of humans/mammals learning strong visual systems. BUT: they do not learn from shuffled image collections. They learn from (essentially) a single long visual stream. This is what we tackle in our new @NeurIPSConf paper, led by Ivan, together with @LukasKnobel1 and me. 1/ arxiv.org/abs/2609.40333

"Visual General Intelligence: A White Paper" is now on arXiv! arxiv.org/abs/2608.25924 We've discussed: - What is Visual Intelligence? - Can we develop it toward General Intelligence (VGI)? In the VGI white paper, we bring together diverse perspectives on Visual Intelligence and discuss how intelligence grounded in visual modalities and experiences could develop toward General Intelligence. Beyond proposing a single definition of VGI, we introduce, propose, and discuss different perspectives on what Visual Intelligence could be and how we could develop it toward General Intelligence. This paper is a starting point for a broader discussion on the future of Visual Intelligence. Many thanks to all the great co-authors!

Self-Supervised Learning of Structured Dynamics from Videos TL;DR: Structured Dynamics Model decomposes video changes into primary and residual motion. Built on frozen DINOv2 features, it separates camera and object motion with weak supervision and outperforms prior representations on multiple motion tasks. arxiv.org/abs/2607.21576

Can MLLMs ask for help? 🤔 When facing an unanswerable visual query, models typically hallucinate or abstain. We argue there's a better option: being proactive and requesting a simple user intervention. Introducing ProactiveBench! 🧵

🎉[openings] I’m hiring postdoctoral researchers to join our @FunAILab at UTN through the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship (@AvHStiftung), via the Henriette Herz Scouting Programme. As a Henriette Herz Scout, I can nominate outstanding international researchers for this fellowship route. I’m especially keen to hear from candidates working on multimodal learning, video and image pretraining, and post-training. Fellows would be hosted in our lab at UTN and work closely with us on these topics. Key requirements: * finished your doctoral studies less than 4 years ago or will finish in the next 6 months * did not live/work in Germany in the last 10 years * applications from female, trans* and/or non-binary candidates are highly encouraged! Interested? Please send a short note with your CV, PhD year, current affiliation, 2–3 key publications, and a few lines on how your work connects. Please share! 🔀

[new CVPR'26 paper] 🔄 SSL works great when you have tons of data. But in 3D… we don’t. High-quality 3D scans are expensive, slow, and hard to scale. So what if we could pretrain 3D models without any real 3D scans? 1/
