Learning To Become A Game Developer I've been going through the process of creating a video game. It's a 2D side-scrolling gauntlet called Slopocalypse. I'm a little over a month in developing this game, and let me tell you, there is just so much going on, so many things to learn, and so many moving parts to keep track of. How do you keep organized? I like to use different ways – from writing on paper or sticky notes to using digital tracker keepers to AI tools; I would say if you got em, use em. · Milanote · Miro · MS Word/Google Docs · Excel/Google Sheets · Claude · Grok · ChatGPT The above are the tools I use for staying organized. What's involved in becoming a game developer? There are so many things to keep track of, as I said earlier, but there are also so many factors in game development, it's not just coding, or adding assets into the engine. Aside from learning: - Coding - A Game Engine - Game Mechanics You also have to think about: - Art/Assets - Sound/Music - Scope - Psychology - Philosophy - Human/Animal/Insect Anatomy - How things work in the real world or how your "thing" works in your own physics/reality, but being able to describe it and actually make it work within the game. I mean, there are so many factors! Do you feel overwhelmed right now? Look, I know this may be a lot to take in if you're considering making games. But don't worry, you'll be able to learn all of this in time. Everything at the beginning is baby steps. Learn how to do one thing at a time! Examples: 1. How do I make a playable character? 2. How do I make the character move left, right, up/forward, and down/backward? 3. How do I make the character jump? 4. How do I add platforms or ground to the scene? Start with these baby steps. Don't go beyond what you don't understand yet. If you take your time, you'll slowly start to understand every aspect of the engine, the quirks, bugs, and how to debug them; everything will come naturally to you in time. Work on your projects daily/weekly! Do not stop working on your project or game dev in general. If you really want to become a game dev, just keep making projects. No great game developer ever made their perfect game in one shot. It doesn't happen, and if it does, that's a 1 in billion chance. Not trying to be rude, but we may never get that kind of chance. Buuuuut, eventually, you will make a project that sticks, and lands with an audience. Don't give up, because your first game failed. Don't give up, because you are having trouble learning a game engine. You can ask for help in the engines dedicated discords or community groups, you can read the game engines documentation and tutorials to help you understand better, or you can use anything at your disposal, including AI. Using AI to help you learn. Utilize what you have. We live in such an advanced time; we have tools that can write code for us. But guess what else it can do really well? Help you organize a project from the ground up, and if you are a new dev, it can help you with creating your vision by guiding you through steps. Don't copy and paste code; read through it, try to understand it, and if you still don't, ask the AI to explain it. Even if you have to tell it to dumb it down. If you really want to learn, you won't just run with whatever the AI tool gives you. Instill what you are reading by putting it to use and practicing different ideas with the code you just learned about. Build Small!!! This is beyond important to help you actually build games, like actually make something you or anyone can play. Don't build your dream game off the rip. It's not gonna happen. Sorry, not sorry, bud. But your GTA 6 Clone isn't happening overnight, and it's not happening with a one-shot with AI either. BUILD SMALL!! Your first games should be small games. Tetris clone, snake clone, or your own idea of a small mini game. Maybe something you've made up before as a kid with simple rules and short sessions. Small games are what will help you build toward the big game you want. You can even build those small games as small playable chunks of your big passion project! My main takeaway from this: don't get wrapped up in trying to build everything at once; you'll overwhelm yourself and burn out, and that one big game you want to build will never happen. Thank you for taking the time to read. If you're new to game development and liked what I had to say, consider leaving a like, and if you want to be a part of my gaming journey, follow, and we'll build towards making the games we want to see come to life!

Almost time to go home from work. I got 2 things on my list for when I get home: 1. We're smoking a fat bowl today 2. We're going to eat some fooooooood After that, we're going to see what we can do as far as development goes. It's time to get back to developing our game!

Ours fans loved it! Some never even touching physical media before! We made sure to make them all insert and eject their own disk, which I have to admit is more fun than a thumb drive, even though our game supports thumb drive "character disks" as well. xitter.cf/IndieLauraSDG/status/2…
Our youngest playtester this weekend was the son of one of our KS backers… This was his very first experience with a keyboard and PC gaming. He’s 6, so he’s still building confidence with reading and needed a few hints here and there, but he eagerly played the whole demo level and asked his Dad if they could get a floppy drive to play more at home. It’s always been our goal to make classic games that reach both older and newer generations of gamers. Live playtesting at an event like this allows us see how the game is connecting with players of all ages. It’s a thrill to see it turning out exactly the way we envisioned.

What are your thoughts on indie game devs putting their games on physical media? Just a flash drive that you can plug in and run the game? I wonder how much more of added cost would go into something like that?

Chicken Alfredo with homemade Alfredo sauce, tastes so much better than the jar. My only thing for making it next time is to lay off the salt. 🤦🏻‍♂️ But regardless, it tasted so amazing!
