Imagine telling someone they are free to live however they choose, then handing them a 70,000-page instruction manual explaining all the ways they can be fined, taxed, licensed, surveilled, or imprisoned for doing so.
We've allowed politicians to turn ordinary human existence into a regulated privilege, and somehow they've convinced millions of people that demanding their permission is the price of civilization.
