When I was at U Chicago we had a 53rd year PhD defense. They started a career in grad school and remained ABD until after retirement. All of our completion stats were skewed because they never officially left the program.
On the bright side, it looks like those 11th years finally finished.

Soon after the university implemented automatic removal after like 15 years. This upset many “former” grad students who had been using their U Chicago emails for decades.

Was teaching Plato’s ‘Gorgias’ today. The level of invective he has for cosmetics will always be hilarious to me.

Sitting down to referee a journal submission only to find out that it’s entirely AI produced (and a pretty poor instance of that) is demoralizing. Just a total waste of my time.

So here are two places where Aristotle, a well-known fan of essences, is perfectly aware of gradualism. Perhaps Dennett doesn't really understand the position he's arguing against.
“I think that Darwin’s ideas undo many of the biggest problems in philosophy. So many philosophers keep hammering away trying to find the essence of this or that when Darwin has shown us that nothing of any interest has an essence. It’s gradualism all the way.” —Daniel Dennett

I started reading philosophy in the 7th grade. I'm fine.
No one should read philosophy until they reach adulthood.

Once again folks are upset with this science curriculum. Ok. But when I was an undergrad you could completely satisfy your science requirement by taking a class called ‘dinosaurs and their friends.’ So it’s not like the norm is anything impressive
This is from Thomas Aquinas College in California. This is what a serious undergraduate education looks like.

Um akshualy the telos of rocks, given their earthen character, is to move to the center of the cosmos, not near the ground, and celestial bodies are made of aither because its the only simple body with a nonrectilinear natural motion. Get it right!
Philosophy of mind discourse on Twitter is the specific place I consistently see otherwise very smart people say the equivalent of "Well moron rocks could never orbit the Earth because their telos is to be close to the ground, everyone with half a brain knows that."

1. Declare a “valuable” major (get loans) 2. Complete requirements for “worthless” major (still get loans) 3. Switch major declaration in last semester. 👍💵
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

My AI reply guys are not impressed with my knowledge of Aristotle. And The Philosopher himself? Please. He’s never even heard of J-Space.

More seriously, I’ve seen a lot worse. They’re upfront the focus is western civ (why one Confucius exception then). And there’s a separate world lit list. I’d make some dif choices (Sappho, Boethius...) But the downsides of a huge list are real and subtractions aren’t obvious
A faculty member shared this with me today: a preliminary list of 50 “foundational authors” for @UTAustin’s proposed Great Questions of Human Life core courses. At least two-thirds of each course would draw from the list. What do you make of this list? texastribune.org/2026/08/13/…

Actually, the more I look at it the more I’d change. If it’s just an author bank it could do with a couple dozen more entries

Better Call Saul is a slow burn. I could appreciate the acting/writing in the first couple seasons. But I just wasn’t that interested in elder law and it was often a slog. But once it gets rolling, it’s better than Breaking Bad.
I think BETTER CALL SAUL is actually better than BREAKING BAD

Am I “an expert in the field?” I defended a dissertation in phil mind and have taught it, including questions about AI, for almost 20 years. My vote is no, they don’t think. Probably “biased” then. 🤷‍♂️
IDK if you polled some unbiased sample of experts in the field (granted, "experts" and "unbiased" are doing a lot of work there), I imagine most of them would roughly agree with the idea that AI models "think," at least for more advanced tasks.

I know these lists are ultimately rage inducing click bait. Well, it worked. Placing Twin Peaks: The Return at 47, one place behind Broad City of all shows, was designed in a lab to enrage me
The New York Times’ final list of the 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century is now complete. What do you make of the final ranking? Which placements surprised you the most?
