Think back to just a few months ago. Friar fans were worried about making a coaching change, losing players to the portal, and what the future of Providence basketball would look like.
Fast forward to today. Bryan Hodgson hasn’t even coached his first official game at Providence, and he’s already landed Lewis Uvwo, a 5-star recruit, and Javon Bardwell, a former 5-star prospect.
The excitement around this program has completely shifted before the season has even started.
We went from worrying about the future to being excited about what’s being built.
What a hire by Providence. The ceiling for this program feels higher than it has in years.

Prompt: compare the 2026-2027 Providence college men’s basketball team to the 2026-2027 Syracuse men’s basketball teams. Ceiling, roster construction, strengths, etc. take exhibitions results, transfer class, returners, head coach, etc, into account, make it a graphic.

Providence just manhandled another Power 5 program in Georgia Tech! 🔥
The Friars have won their two exhibition games by an average of 25 POINTS!
And what’s crazy is they’re doing this WITHOUT four all-conference players from last season:
🏀 Derek Simpson – First Team All-A-10
🏀 Devin Vanterpool – Third Team All-American Conference
🏀 Ryan Sabol – Third Team All-MAC
🏀 Joe Pinion – Third Team All-American Conference
FOUR all-conference players potentially joining a team that’s already dominating Power 5 competition.
If the 5th Year Players become eligible, just how HIGH is the ceiling for this Providence team?! 👀

Providence has now disposed of two ACC teams --- Georgia Tech and Pitt --- in back-to-back weeks at Amica Mutual Pavilion by an average margin of victory of 25.5 PPG. 41 assists on 69 made field goals during that span. Open on 11/2 vs. Maine.

We got reactions from the Friars 101-73 exhibition win over Georgia Tech. November 2nd can’t get here soon enough! theprovidencecrier.com/2026/…
Losing Derek Simpson and Joe Pinion after today’s court hearing definitely hurts, but let’s not forget that Providence still has a really good roster capable of making noise this season.
This is the risk we took trying to take advantage of the 5-for-5 rule. We took a swing, and unfortunately, it didn’t work out.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of these players at other schools who were granted eligibility under the same rule end up getting ruled ineligible as the season goes on.
Oh well. It is what it is. Time to move forward.
