Did you know that some of Spain and Portugal's most important carbon reservoirs lie beneath the sea?
Seagrass meadows and tidal marshes store around 95 Tg CO₂-eq, with more than 98% locked away in coastal sediments.

New study published in #Ecosystems
A global meta-analysis of >1,500 comparisons shows that seagrass ecosystem services are not uniform.
Carbon storage, pollution mitigation and biodiversity support vary substantially among genera and environmental settings

UNESCO-designated sites are essential to climate stability.
Researchers from GAME (CEAB-CSIC), Dr Oscar Serrano and PhD researcher Enric Gomis, contributed to the report by supporting the assessment of blue carbon in seagrass meadows within UNESCO-designated sites.
These numbers tell a bigger story.
From climate regulation to biodiversity protection, @UNESCO-designated sites are critical to life on Earth — yet nearly 90% are under pressure.
