We should be seriously concerned by these comments from National MP Michael Butterick, New Zealand’s Associate Minister for Organics. He’s supposed to be championing the organics sector, or is he just the strawman? Butterick also suggests the HSNO Amendment Bill isn’t about deregulating genetic engineering. Do these MPs even read bills anymore? The ‘NO’ in HSNO literally stands for ‘NEW ORGANISMS’. And one of the most concerning changes in this HSNO Amendment Bill is a new power allowing the EPA to declare certain organisms “new” - ultimately removing them from regulations they would otherwise be subject to. The Bill also introduces vague and entirely new terminologies and leaves critical questions unanswered, including what constitutes “significant effects”. The HSNO Amendment Bill has been developed in anticipation of passing the Gene Technology Bill, with both reforms intended to totally de-regulate how gene technology and GMOs/GE is regulated in New Zealand’s food and farming systems. Yet the Gene Technology Bill has faced fierce public opposition and has now stalled due to lack of political support across the floor. So why are they still trying to flog a dead horse? Why is our Minister responsible for Organics downplaying and obfuscating these changes that could have serious consequences for the very sector he’s supposed to represent? The short answer is NO! TOP won’t be protecting your GE FREE food production New Zealanders. 👎 And did you notice? Daniel Eb, uttered both a scientific truth and falsehood in this interview: “At some point, someone has to put a seed in the ground, and it’s hard to control once that happens” “…but we think we can do both” No you can’t. ✋ Coexistence between our Organics Sector and GMOs is scientifically impossible. Any politician suggesting otherwise is misleading New Zealanders, knowingly, or unknowingly. Seems TOP is drinking the koolaid of vested interest government scientists, and industry. TOP has long held policies supporting deregulation of New Zealand’s genetic modification laws, into your food and environment. And after realising the public doesn’t want these GE bills, TOP has interestingly shifted their public statements to suggesting they don’t support the “rushed” Gene Tech Bill..🤔 But based on Daniel’s answers and their historical policies, can you trust TOP if they got into parliament, and what do they mean “replace the bill”? Having a citizens assembly is a start… But New Zealanders have already spoken, we want these bills DEAD and buried!
