A planned US takeover of critical infrastructure in the Netherlands raises troubling questions for all of us in Europe and the UK.

A longer post from me to start the year: the Dutch are panicking. Their digital ID system will soon fall under the control of an American company and far-reaching US government powers.
Why is that such a problem? And what does it mean for the UK?

Is the UK really 'flying blind' when it comes to economic data? Was it ever? My guest this week Jonathan Portes has a different idea about what data politicians need.

Now that the 2031 UK census is going ahead, the ONS has to decide what's going to be in it.
For that they've asked the public to submit ideas for new questions. Could this be a terrible idea? And what would you like to know about 70 million people?

Sum of Us spotted by a contact at the Labour conference! 🙌
Want to better understand our complicated, love-hate relationship with ID cards, population registers, data privacy, and being counted and put in boxes by the state?
Pick it up from the conference bookshop!
ID cards are go! Perfect timing to plug my latest book Sum of US which I highly recommend for an in-depth look at our tortured history with ID cards and population registers in the UK.

Recent revisions to US employment stats were less an act of inside sabotage and more about businesses behaving unexpectedly due to Trump's chaotic tariff regime.
Attacks on 'phony' statisticians take us to a very dark place. My latest post for Substack:

Is electoral reform now inevitable? The public momentum has never been greater. And voters across all parties now back change - even Labour voters who got really lucky from FPTP in 2024.
Did you know this was going on?

The population increase in England and Wales since 2021 is wild when taken in longer-term context.
The years 2022-24 saw the largest annual population increases outside of the two world wars. Natural change was close to zero, so the increase was all from migration.
It's also really striking to see the scale of those wartime international population movements. Just crazy how many people were sent abroad and returned again. Part of the WWII peak could also be from displaced people/refugees.

Today's stage of the #TourdeFrance is just so brutal. 140km of flat and then bam, 1,400km of elevation. Final 15km at an average of nearly 9%.

Economic forecasting is not an exact science - and no one sensible would argue that.
Yet politicians increasingly use these shifting targets to make real and sometimes painful spending decisions. Should they?
