SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Do you remember in The Lion King when scar told the hyenas if they helped him become king he will make their lives better and then their lives didn’t get better and he blamed them for it. And upon realizing this, the hyenas ate him. Do with that story what you will.

Stay away from rivers, shorelines, and trails near the North Shore Mountains. Conditions are dangerous: fast-moving water, flooding, and unstable banks pose life-threatening hazards. Stay safe and avoid these areas. metrovancouver.org/services/…

🌀The Black River Police Station has become a refuge for residents whose houses have been flooded. We are sticking close to the community as we weather Hurricane Melissa together. #TrackingHurricaneMelissa #AForce4Good

#MELISSA is worse than “worse case scenario”. This is generational. The human suffering in parts of #Jamaica will be unimaginable to modern standards. I could not fathom a monster like this. I’ve studied so many hurricanes, and I can’t even believe what I’m looking at.

A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser shortly after 8 p.m. tonight. The driver is in custody. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds.

Thank you for sharing. I am very familiar with the mechanisms you have outlined. This post was written deliberately for parents who need clear, accessible information - not a deep academic breakdown. In clinical practice, we address the full complexity of mitochondrial dysfunction as part of a broader, multidisciplinary approach.

Going to chime in here, but the Mitochondria don't "shift into survival" - they straight up 'kick it'. Especially in #LongCovid, causing things like: fatigue, brain fog, and inflammation. Stating adoption of some 'transitional state' such as a "Shift" is not correct. -In acute COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 directly 'impairs' mitochondria by disrupting ATP production, increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS), and damaging mitochondrial structure (e.g., swollen cristae). -In Long COVID, persistent mitochondrial 'dysfunction' evidenced by suppressed oxidative phosphorylation, reduced fatty acid oxidation, and elevated lactate - contributes to symptoms, alongside inflammation, neuroinflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Now apply that to kids as they grow and get repeatedly exposed. Their mitochondria don't go to sleep, they are damaged. -Studies (e.g., muscle biopsies, CPET) show clear mitochondrial failure, not a "survival mode." -Your post oversimplifies a multifactorial condition, ignores viral and immune-mediated damage, and lacks evidence for its treatment implications. Long COVID symptoms arise from complex mechanisms, requiring multidisciplinary care, not just nutritional fixes. References: DOI:10.3390/ijms24032050, DOI:10.1038/s41598-024-66873-3.
