This is why
Idk what happened with the racing game community in recent years, but it feels like everyone just complains these days… Anti fun police, sucking the soul out of everything PLEASE shut up 😭

Just wanted to clarify that I'm not saying these videos or the points in them are 'wrong'. I'm replying to someone asking why the community complains constantly, and these influx of videos (even if there were good intentions initially) was a big factor in this problem.

Barring the obvious joke, it really infurates me when people dismiss the gameplay of racing games as 'Well it's just driving / racing'. Some do suffer from pretty basic gameplay, but there is a lot more substance in these games if you take more than a surface level look at them.
Burnout 3 is the greatest game of all time until you start playing and remember they forgot to add gameplay to it

Usually when people talk about "the best games of all time", you don't really see racing games in those lists. Its a damn shame too, as the genre has been such an integral part of video games, and yet it keeps getting overlooked.
Burnout 3 is underrated as one of the very, very best games of all time because you can show Burnout 3 footage to people two decades later and their reaction will still be "hell yeah, this rules. I wanna play this right now."

This is a good time to repost my top 9 favorite racing games.
Very basic list from a filthy arcade racers player.

Just wanted to thank everyone who provided proper explanations and corrected me on a few things (like emulation vs translation) Regardless, my point stands that many of these projects aren't proper native PC ports if stuff like GPU rendering is still being emulated / translated.
Stop falling for this non-sense. A lot of these 'native PC ports / recomps' are nothing but emulation wrapped up a fancy exe using AI. Please explain to me why this 'native port' has a shadPS4 folder, and game patches used on shadPS4.

In saying all of this, I do recognize that generative AI can be a helpful tool, whether its research, code debugging, etc. The problem is that people with no or limited experience in software development are abusing it, making garbage programs that you should stay far away from.

Stuff that may just 'work' on the surface could have serious issues underneath, like huge security risks. Especially nowadays, be very weary of the programs and services you are using. It's not worth getting a virus or compromising your data because you ran a sketchy 'recomp'...

It was a pain to set up shadPS4 and DriveClub, so I certainly get the appeal. What I mainly hate is how people are lying about these projects, saying they are recomps when at best, its a half truth. The rampant 'vibe coding' with stuff like this also doesn't help.

This is something that is important to note in all the new "recompiled" games coming out. Many of them, as noted here, are still using emulated, translated graphics backends, and are not in fact a full decompile/recompile. It's like if a game company released a "native" linux build using WINE as a wrapper (a-la witcher 2). Sure, they are more convenient than setting up an emulator, but under the hood they are still emulating the graphics instead of natively rendering them. I say this because I understand the work that goes into actually decompile/recompiling/building your own graphics backend instead of using an emulator to translate it. Sure, I also promote using AI as an effective tool for working on this, but I think if decompiles/recompiles are going to be made, they need to be full, legitimate decompiles, not using translation layers, as that's where you can really crank out performance gains and other features and optimizations. I've been working on my gears of war 3 recompile for what seems like weeks if not months now simply because I am doing a full graphics backend recompile, NOT using xenia's xb360 graphics translator, and even I didn't start that from scratch, I used the SonicDE decompiled gpu backend as a base: xitter.cf/GloriousEggroll/status… Even now I'm still trying to fix a few fps drops during combat, but otherwise the framerate has massively improved due to putting in the time to try to fix it via decompiled/recompiled code, rather than just relying on xenia's translator and calling it a day. This is the current WIP result I have, which is more than playable but still needs some fixing on those drops. Mind you it's also upscaled to 4k, no FSR:

No one can ever convince me that GRID Legends is somehow mid or bad.
Grid is genuinely scary at times.
