Promising heat pump news! The Canadian Govt's new Green Building Strategy plans to explore requiring "installation of heat pumps instead of one-way central air conditioners in all new homes and certain retrofit scenarios." tinyurl.com/CanadaGBS
For more on the new 🇨🇦 Green Building Strategy (and where it falls short), see this helpful explainer by @br_haley: efficiencycanada.org/canada-…
And the original @CLASPappliances Hybrid Heat Homes report I wrote with @energysmartwv @mattxmal @spantano shows switching from central AC to Heat Pumps would be a smart idea for 🇺🇸 as well: clasp.ngo/research/all/3h-hy…

We have millions of orphaned or abandoned oil and gas wells across the country that industry has not paid to clean up. Many of them are leaking. Climate pollution capture and storage should start right here!
Our PA thermographer Melissa Ostroff was on-site at the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania last week. Armed with a specialized OGI camera, she discovered alarming signs of pollution from the ground around a well. It's a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant. #EnvironmentalRights #AlleghenyNationalForest #PollutionAlert
Fossil fuel dependence is a security threat.

Outside the EU, in the UK @RishiSunak @grantshapps are spending more on gas while moving slowly on introducing help for renewables (not to mention hitting renewables with new energy taxes):

Canadians deserve two-way heat pumps, not one-way central air conditioners!
New @GreenhouseInst report I wrote with Matt Poirier (@bdacanada), @br_haley (@EfficiencyCan), & @sarah_kmiller (@climateinstit) shows why #heatpumps are the future:

If you want to know how installing heat pumps instead of central ACs would work in practice, look no further than @CityofVancouver, where they've already implemented this. City Planner @CAHiggins calls it a "no-regrets move" and says the transition has been "smooth"!
This work was inspired by @energysmartwv's original thinking and work we did with @mattxmal @CLASPappliances & Steve Pantano on #HybridHeatHomes:

Feeling called out by @KateAronoff in her excellent @newrepublic article as I wake up to write about...tax credits to install heat pumps:
"Few people get up in the morning excited about [...] tax credits to install heat pumps."
