On this day in 1996, the last Irish Magdalene Laundry closed its slave labour prison doors. Originally called the Gloucester Street Laundry, located on Sean MacDermott Street it was owned and exploited by the nuns of the ironically titled "Sisters of Our Lady of Charity". When it closed it was home to 40 inmates, its average capacity during its heyday was 150 women working and living there. A little-known fact is that the first laundry for "fallen women" was actually founded by the Protestant Church of Ireland in 1765. However it didn't take long for the Catholic church to combine power and penitence with profit, and they created a veritable gulag network for incarcerating and torturing vulnerable or nonconformist girls and women. Over 30,000 souls suffered in these institutions in Ireland. In 1993 land owned in Drumcondra by the aforementioned Sisters of Our Lady of Charity was bought by a property developer. Whilst it was being redeveloped the bodies of 155 women were uncovered in a mass grave. Of these victims, only 133 were identified by name in an exhumation license granted to the Sisters. And of those only 75 had a death certificate. These girls and women, and whatever babies they produced, didn't matter. They had no intrinsic value to the nuns, priests, and bishops beyond the profit they could make by their sweat and the sale of their children. Magdalene Laundries are a warning from Irish history. When you grant blind obedience and immune status to an organisation, whether it be religious, political, or economic, that power will be exploited and those most powerless will suffer most.

I'm an American, a U.S. Army veteran, and I live in Europe. And I'll tell you something that might upset a few people back home. I want my fellow Americans to enjoy the same rights, freedoms, and quality of life that millions of Europeans already enjoy. I want Americans to have access to affordable healthcare without worrying about going bankrupt because they got sick. I want American students to pursue higher education without burying themselves in decades of debt. I want Americans to enjoy stronger digital privacy laws, meaningful consumer protections, paid parental leave, and guaranteed paid vacation. I want police officers held to rigorous standards of accountability, where de-escalation is emphasized and deadly force is genuinely a last resort. I want Americans to understand that freedom isn't just about what the government cannot do to you. It's also about having the security and opportunity to actually enjoy your life. And before someone starts screaming about socialism, understand something. European countries are capitalist democracies. They have private businesses, entrepreneurs, private property, competitive markets, and individual liberties. They've simply made different decisions about what protections their citizens should enjoy. Europe isn't perfect. No place is. But pretending America has nothing to learn from other democracies is ridiculous. I served my country. I love my country. And I don't believe patriotism requires pretending that America is the best at everything. In fact, I believe the exact opposite. Real patriotism means wanting your country to improve, even when that means admitting another country does something better. I don't want Americans to have fewer freedoms. I want them to have MORE. More protections. More opportunities. More security. More accountability. More freedom to live their lives without being financially destroyed by illness, education, or circumstances beyond their control. And having lived on both sides of the Atlantic, I know that much of this is possible. We should stop asking why Americans can't have these things and start asking why they're expected to settle for less.

Bono is still pushing the idea that all religions can COEXIST. It’s already shown up in two U2 tracks this year: “COEXIST (I Will Bless The Lord At All Times?)” and the video for the new single “The Greatest Show On Earth.” Expect it to surface again on the upcoming tour—echoing the 2005 Vertigo Tour, when Bono wore the headband and declared: “Jesus, Jew, Muhammad… it’s true, all sons of Abraham.” A big idea. And a controversial one. Perhaps more a prayer. Which side are you on? Can all religions COEXIST, or is Bono being too idealistic? 📽️ Scenes from “The Greatest Show On Earth”

If Musk can slow down Starlink to help Russia against Ukraine- and he did… Zuckerberg can turn off the “No Kings” Instagram account on a day millions are gathering to protest Trump - and he did… Then surely they can use their skills to interfere with an election. And…

NEWS: Starlink keeps a Northern Ireland community connected during power cuts 🇮🇪 Starlink is now a storm backup for a neighborhood in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. The Bowtown community has a satellite connection in place so residents can stay online when severe weather knocks out the power. When storms hit, broadband and cell service often go down with the grid, and isolated people are the first to be cut off. Storm Chandra left around 10,000 properties in the area without power this January, so this isn't hypothetical. One community hub with satellite internet can be the difference.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

So clearly, Donald Judas Trump, the President of the United States, is unfit if he is agreeing with such orders from a private citizen. Americans are making excuses for Donald. He makes the final decision. He could’ve said no. He actively is helping Russia attack and kill Ukrainians. Donald Trump is a war criminal and he needs to be held accountable. ma

I think a billion people across the Western alliance are beginning to spot the tiny design flaw in buying American weapons under Trump: when the enemy arrives, your F-35 may be perfectly capable of fighting them, right up until Washington decides your login privileges are under review. Then you can sit in your $100 million fighter jet, admire the warning screen, and wait while Trump makes a deal with the bloke attacking you.
