I'm fascinated by descriptions of the abundance of now rare species. This is W. H. Hudson in 1900, writing about turtle doves in the South Downs. The species is now on the verge of extinction in the UK. For more info, including how to help, see @SaveTurtleDoves

Almost everything about carbon is now a scam Biodiversity is the same - on the ground these things involve massive shifts in power and wealth to major players and away from ordinary people and small businesses and farmers It doesn’t have to be like this

Mark this as one of the most important papers ever published on birds in the Anthropocene. Just incredible work by @MHCNeateClegg. His analyses show that birds are best able to deal with climate change by adjusting their breeding onset, not by shifting their ranges.

This is an explicit commitment to capturing land value uplift - that is when farmland worth eg £10,000 an acre, becomes development land worth £1M+/acre. Typically the profit goes to the landowner, with only Capital Gains Tax (24%) to pay (or nothing if CGT exemptions apply). ⬇️
