Hagamos historia votando socialista.

The web rewrite is working. On a slow connection, the old X web took more than 22 seconds to show the first post on a profile. The new X web does it in 2.7 seconds. Here's how we did it, and how we're rolling it out one country at a time. blog.x.com/en/engineering/re…

Was chatting with an experienced architect last night. She said that what used to take them 1.5 years of work (turning architectural designs into construction-ready drawings), now takes them *8 minutes* with AI.

Finance called IT because a customer owed us $240,000 and nobody could find them. Customer name: TEST CUSTOMER DO NOT USE. I recognized it immediately. I created that account two years ago to test our billing software. It had a fake address. A fake phone number. The contact email was [email protected]. Apparently Sales found the account last quarter and used it to demonstrate our new quoting system. Someone accidentally converted the demonstration quote into a real order. That triggered an invoice. The invoice went unpaid. Our collections software sent seven payment reminders to [email protected]. Nobody responded. Finance escalated the account to a debt collection agency. The agency spent three weeks trying to locate TEST CUSTOMER DO NOT USE. They reported the company had no registered address, no employees, and no known assets. Finance classified the account as high-risk. Yesterday Legal asked me for the customer's original contract. I explained there was no customer. They asked whether we could prove that. I said I personally invented the company. Legal said that wasn't sufficient documentation. Apparently writing "DO NOT USE" in the customer name doesn't legally establish that the customer doesn't exist. We're now paying $8,000 for an external auditor to determine whether a company I made up owes us $240,000. Finance has asked me not to delete the account until the investigation concludes. It's our third-largest customer this quarter.

basically this
The White underclass is a miracle, and probably why the West has succeeded. Thomas Frank wrote “What’s the Matter with Kansas” to explore why poor Whites don’t vote for socialist policies that would (narrowly, in the short-term) benefit them. Of course he concluded it was about racism, as he was predetermined to do by his ideology. But I actually think he highlighted an incredibly important fact: poor White Americans, uniquely among underclasses globally, don’t vote for socialism. The typical dynamic is rich people trying to keep what they have and poor people trying to take it. But the American lower-class White does not behave this way, because he has a deontological aversion to government interference. The collection of attitudes and beliefs described as “rugged individualism” are often assessed in terms of how they impact the individual, but I think it’s much more important to consider how they impact a nation. (White) America has the world’s least resentful or grasping underclass. This is a treasure. They should be preserved and rewarded. Many might be net-negative fiscally in a narrow sense, but they are hugely net-positive if you consider their votes. Trump famously said “I love the poorly educated.” He was right to say this. Every nation has an elite. No other nation has such a high quality of virtuous common people.

Software is a most malleable substance, a fungible substrate for making imagination manifest in the physical world. While human innovation knows no bounds, there are limits to what we can and cannot do in computing. First, there are the laws of physics. We cannot transmit information faster than the speed of light; thermodynamics constrains the design of integrated circuits; computational speed and storage density have energy considerations. Next, algorithms. While we might have a theoretical framework for some process, turning that into an effective algorithm requires discovery; Fast Fourier Transform, the Viterbi algorithm, and transformers are all such examples. Architecture is the next barrier. Assembling a system at scale is far more than the operation of its parts. Organizations are where the human elements of computing begin to dominate. A simple person working alone can do remarkable things, but to build an enduring system of global reach demands a team. Economics: many things are possible, but not all things are viable, because they cost money, and in the end, those with the money will require a return on their investment, else they will take their money elsewhere. Finally there are the legal, ethical, and moral elements. Not everything that can be done, should be done. It is these latter topics that are clear and present problems for @OpenAI, @AnthropicAI, and @grok. How will this unfold? Time will tell.

Electricity took 40 years to pay off. Factories swapped the steam engine for one big motor and kept the old layout. Most companies are doing the same with AI. We changed the layout instead: ~25x per engineer. francesc.net/notes/a-motor-p…

My prediction for software engineering over the next 3 to 5 years. AI won't replace software engineers. It'll drive even greater demand for them. A team of 5 experienced engineers using AI will outperform a team of 20 pre-AI. Which will dramatically reduce the cost of building software. I think we'll see Jevons paradox in action. As something becomes cheaper and more efficient to produce, demand for it can increase dramatically. Thousands of software projects that previously weren't economically viable will become worth doing. The winners will be companies, big and small, that behave like Google, Amazon and 3M, with a culture of experimentation, a willingness to try lots of ideas and the discipline to kill their darlings. TL/DR: Smaller engineering teams, more innovation, more software products, and potentially more software engineers than ever. What do you think?
