He was earning $350,000 a year at Meta. So why did Ninad Mundalik walk away from it all to retire in Vietnam? After spending nearly a decade working for companies like Electronic Arts (@EA) and @Meta in the US, Ninad had built a successful career and a strong financial portfolio. His first job paid him $110K a year. Years later, his compensation at Meta reached nearly $300K-$350K. But somewhere along the way, he realised something was missing. His peace. The pressure of working in tech, job uncertainty and the complicated US visa system started taking a toll on him. So, he decided to explore something different. During a trip to Southeast Asia, he discovered Da Nang, a beautiful beach town in Vietnam. And what started as a vacation eventually became his new home. With financial independence, he was able to leave the corporate hustle behind and build a life on his own terms. Today, he enjoys a peaceful lifestyle, works on his passion projects and spends more time with his family. And the best part? He can live comfortably in Vietnam on a budget of around $1,000-$1,500 per month. - What made Ninad leave a $350K career in the US? - How did he build his financial independence, and - What does his life in Vietnam actually cost? ₹100 in India in 2019 buys you less today. But how much less depends on where you live. Since 2019, consumer prices have risen by: 🇦🇷 Argentina: 3,910% 🇹🇷 Türkiye: 829% 🇪🇬 Egypt: 174% 🇮🇳 India: 35.5% 🇺🇸 US: 26% 🇨🇭 Switzerland: 6.2% 🇨🇳 China: 6% In India, something that cost ₹100 in 2019 would cost ₹135.50 today. For NRIs earning in one currency and spending or investing in another, inflation is only one part of the equation. Exchange rates and income growth matter too. Has your cost of living kept pace with your income?

He was earning $325K in the US, but still returned to Ahmedabad after just 5 years. This is the story of Keval Morabia. After his master’s, Keval started working in AI at Bloomberg in New York. He later joined a small Silicon Valley startup, where his career and finances were both growing quickly. But then he made a decision most people around him probably didn’t expect. In 2024, he chose to move to Ahmedabad and continued working with his US team from India. The move was financially more complicated than he expected. He had to figure out what to do with his US investments, taxes, and brokerage accounts. At one point, $15,000 in crypto got stuck for three months because of an account issue. Which made him realise that better tax planning could have saved him money. But despite all of this, he doesn’t regret coming back. And that’s what makes his story more interesting. So what really made him leave a $325K career in the US after just five years? And what did he learn while making the move back to India? 🚨 An NRI earned less than ₹1 lakh in India. Now, they're answering questions about foreign bank accounts. The mistake? Filing taxes as a resident to “keep things simple.” But India's tax system has a rule many NRIs overlook: your residency status can change what you must disclose, not just how much tax you pay. And yes, foreign financial data can reach Indian tax authorities. Here's how it works. 🧵
2

115
Where the mismatch begins Imagine your Indian tax return says you're a resident Indian but doesn't disclose foreign assets. Information received from overseas financial institutions may show accounts linked to you. That discrepancy can prompt questions from the tax department. It doesn't automatically prove wrongdoing, but it can mean you need to explain the mismatch.

The takeaway for NRIs Before filing your Indian ITR, get three things right: ➡️ Your actual tax residency status. ➡️ Whether foreign asset disclosure applies to you. ➡️ Whether you've chosen the correct ITR form and schedules. Don't choose tax residency just because it makes filing easier. Choose it because it reflects your actual circumstances. When it comes to cross-border taxes, getting the status wrong can cost far more than getting professional advice.
