In previous decades, it didn't take much to be labelled a witch: an unexplained death, illness or other misfortune was often enough to spark suspicion. The victims of witch hunts are exiled to settlements like this one. #CarteBlanche @masakekana

THE MINI-BUDGET IN PLAIN ENGLISH: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has delivered the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement earlier today. While the economic backdrop remains challenging, the stateβs finances are showing signs of stabilisation.
Hereβs a breakdown of whatβs been announced and how it impacts you.
RELIEF AT THE PUMPS
To help ease high living costs, government is temporarily slashing the fuel levy:
- 4 November β 1 December 2026: Petrol drops by R1.50/L and diesel drops by R3.00/L.
- 2 December 2026 β 5 January 2027: Petrol drops by R1.00/L and diesel drops by R1.50/L.
BASIC SERVICES & GRANTS
Around 60% of non-interest government spending continues to go towards social services:
- Social Support: Funding stays in place for 18.1 million grant beneficiaries (including old-age, disability, and child support grants).
- Free Basic Services: Over 11 million low-income households will continue receiving free basic water, electricity, sanitation, and refuse removal.
- Fighting Malnutrition: R1.6 billion over the next three years is dedicated to early childhood nutrition to tackle child stunting.
SAFER COMMUNITIES & FIGHTING CRIME
New funding aims to boost safety and speed up justice:
- Police Fleet: R810 million next year to buy new vehicles for SAPS.
- Support for Victims: R3.8 billion to employ over 3,500 social workers to fight Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). Sexual offences courts will also expand from 55 to 101.
- Army Support: R823 million allocated to the SANDF to help police combat gang violence and illegal mining.
UNCLAIMED MONEY & DIGITAL ACCESS
- Lost Funds: Government is finalising plans to help citizens trace and recover unclaimed financial assets like forgotten pension benefits.
- Single Government App: R150 million is allocated to build the MyMzansi app, designed to let you access various government services in one place on your phone.

UPDATE: The SSA has agreed to a court order allowing media access to the trial of Thulani Dlomo and Patrick Mshotola. As per @News24, the new order "will also grant the media access to some of the evidentiary documents that form the basis of the charges, while the remainder will be disclosed only in redacted form." @amaBhungane @dailymaverick @_FreeExpression

π¨ MEDIA FREEDOM UNDER THREAT: In a dramatic turn at the Gauteng High Court, the SSA (State Security Agency) is demanding total secrecy in the R12-million corruption trial of former operative Thulani Dlomo and Patrick Mshothola.
Facing charges of theft, fraud, and forgery, the accused were granted a courtroom blackout by Presiding Judge Mashudu Munzhelele. Now, a coalition including @News24, @dailymaverick, @amaBhungane, and the @_FreeExpression is urgently challenging the ban.
In response, acting SSA DG James Ramabulana has launched an aggressive counter-application to keep proceedings behind closed doors and court documents sealed, citing fears of leaking "trade secrets" and compromising national security.
Is this a legitimate defense of national intelligence, or an attempt to shield high-level corruption from public scrutiny?
