Let’s recap Day One of the National TVET Week Policy Dialogue, the first of its kind since the Ghana TVET Service was established.
The dialogue provided a platform to discuss critical issues affecting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), while also giving learners the opportunity to showcase their innovations. This ensured that stakeholders did not only hear about TVET but also had the chance to step outside the auditorium to see and experience what our learners are capable of achieving.
Our keynote speaker, Hon. Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana, spoke about the Government’s commitment to strengthening TVET and equipping young people with the practical skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Other speakers included Hon. Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, who delivered a powerful presentation on how the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat is accelerating the development of TVET infrastructure to support Ghana’s 24-hour economy.
Key speakers also included Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service; Prof. George K. T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education; Hon Sena Okiti Duah; National Coordinator for Free SHS/TVET, Mr. Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Eduwatch, Mrs Emelia Awuviri, Head, Development Finance and Sustainability Department of the Bank of Ghana, among others.
The Day One conversations focused on Labour Mobility and Enterprise Development through TVET, led by the GIZ Migration Project, as well as Research and Skills Gap Analysis in the TVET Sector, led by UNICEF. The latter session also provided an opportunity to highlight the ongoing skills-gap research being conducted jointly with UNICEF across the five northern regions of Ghana.
Key participants in the discussions included principals of public technical institutions, learners, private-sector partners, and members of the donor community. In all, the event attracted approximately 1,000 visitors who participated in both the policy dialogue and the exhibitions.
The key lessons and recommendations from the dialogue will be consolidated into a position paper to be submitted to policymakers. The paper will help inform policy reforms and guide efforts to strengthen TVET delivery, improve industry linkages, address skills gaps, and better prepare learners for employment and entrepreneurship.
