There is actually no depictionsof swordsmanship in any fictional medium where they try to restrict it as much as Shanks fans do. You see them using punches and kicks as well in other books/manga/shows/movies

Even in Vagabond, this “pure swordsman” concept doesn’t exist, it’s exclusive to Shanks fans. Musashi doesn’t exclusively fight with the sword, he’s good with hand to hand combat, knows different martial arts, even tho he embodies the path of the sword.

If you think about it, neither is Mihawk. The first time he duels Zoro, he pulls out a small knife (not a sword), disrespecting the swordsman code until he pulls out his actual sword. Nobody fits this strict fan-made category of pure swordsmen. Not even Zoro.
