"The relatively mild discursive norms characteristic of truth-seeking academic work are quite different from the rough, rude, and highly aggressive discursive norms of the vicious point-scoring typical of today’s politics."
The philosophy-specific analysis of the “Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and the Humanistic Social Sciences" has been released. dailynous.com/2026/10/27/the…

"The fast-moving Ebola outbreak in Congo has reached 10,000 confirmed cases..
It is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history and nearly half of the 10,060 confirmed to have the virus have died..
The outbreak declared in May is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment..
It has spread farther across Africa than any previous Ebola outbreak, reaching three regions with cases recorded in Kenya and Nigeria as well..
In Congo, the disease has spread to 66 health zones across eight provinces..
most of the first cases were confirmed long after people started showing symptoms or after traveling.."

It’s now officially confirmed.
Tonight, russia struck Kyiv’s historic centre with an Iskander ballistic missile carrying a cluster warhead.
58 submunitions explode in mid-air, designed to inflict maximum casualties across a 400 × 400 metre area.
“This strike had no military purpose. The goal was to destroy part of the old city and injure as many people as possible,” said a Ukrainian presidential adviser.
No military objective. Just terror.

The kids are alright
Young people actively hate AI.
My two younger daughters are 19 and 18, both at universities - one in the UK the other in Italy. Through them, I happen to know quite a few kids their age.
And ALL OF THEM seem to universally hate AI.
To them it's "something old people invented that we now have to deal with... as if climate change wasnt enough"
AI is cringe. When they introduce me to their friends, they literally say "heyya, meet my dad, he's a software engineer but nonono, NOT IN AI, dont worry, hahah".
They hate it for flooding their social feeds with slop, ruining music, taking phone scams to the next level, also destroying careers & devaluing their hobbies - why become an architect, this skill is about to become worthless? Why learn a musical instrument if session musicians are already obsolete?
The outcome is interesting, though - they're spending less and less time on public social, meeting up IRL, moving their online lives into private group chats with actual verified friends. TikTok and Reels are increasingly cringe-something for old dudes.
Which, I guess, might be a net positive after all...

France: On the island of Corsica, Ghisonaccia has been cut off since just after 15:00 , with every road in and out closed.
EDF Corse says 6,500 homes are without power, and 4,000 of them won't be reconnected before Wednesday morning.
Indeed! See chapter 8: brill.com/display/title/6057…
