Western media parachutes journalists to report on elections and other events in Africa all the time. Thanks to the incredible folks at @thecontinent_ , I am delighted to do a reverse and report on American politics amid some stressful times for democracy. Will America endure?

Paul Biya has been president of Cameroon since 1982. At the end of the term, he’ll be 99. Nearly half the country has known no other president.
Despite serving his eighth term, he appears to spend much of his time in Switzerland. wapo.st/4i1ce9V

This investigation by the Platform for Investigative Journalism is deeply troubling. An American Christian NGO, 2nd Milk, allegedly raised millions in the name of feeding poor Malawian children, while much of the money reportedly went towards personal expenses. Its founders subsequently pleaded guilty to federal charges in the United States.
I recently saw another NGO raising funds abroad using photographs of Malawians whose houses had been destroyed by bad weather. To my knowledge, none of those houses was ever rebuilt.
Some international NGOs do genuinely commendable work. Others appear to have discovered that African poverty can be a lucrative business.

We spent many years exposing Jason Carney at PIJ. He is now going to serve a long prison sentence.
Donations meant to feed vulnerable babies funded personal luxuries. Now, the founders of 2nd Milk are headed to prison.
Jason Boyd Carney has been sentenced to 16 years after diverting more than an equivalent of K3.4 billion.
