I raised the fact that theres load of buddleia growing out the roof of Govanhill’s beautiful library through @Soryia . The council’s reply is mad given they presumably just need a cherry picker and a bottle of roundup. “The buddleia growth is recorded in the roof condition report, which identified 58 observations ranging from routine maintenance requirements to more significant defects affecting the roof’s integrity. Its removal forms part of the scope of the proposed roof works; however, those works are not currently funded or scheduled. The estimated cost of the proposed roof works is £373,679 excluding VAT. Given the scale of this cost and the absence of an identified funding source, Glasgow Life is not currently in a position to commit to the works or provide a delivery timescale. Capital funding for these works is not currently available, nor has funding been identified within future years’ capital expenditure plans. This reflects the significant competing priorities across the wider estate and the need to direct limited capital resources towards the most urgent statutory, safety and operational requirements.”

In the summer of 2021, Scottish-Kenyan singer-songwriter Beldina Odenyo was on the cusp of stardom. Hailed as a fierce, uncompromising artist with a voice that could silence a room, she was working on her eagerly awaited debut album. In October, she headlined at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, delivering a performance that left the audience spellbound, and promoters and musicians convinced it would launch her career. Two weeks later, Bel took her own life at just 31.  This is the story of the artist behind the voice and the sister determined to ensure Bel’s music continues to live on after her death. Filmed over three years, this intimate documentary is guided by Bel’s older sister Leah, who inherited Bel’s notebooks, journals and songbooks as well as a precious hard drive containing a folder of recordings labelled ‘passable demos’, and vows to finish the album and release it to the world.  As Leah pieces together Bel’s recordings, the film unfolds through video diaries, phone recordings, audio files and candid footage that Bel left behind. Through these fragments, Bel begins to narrate her own story bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0…

Unfortunately this sort of thing has been happening in Govanhill for years and will continue to happen until more controls are put in place around monitoring and enforced maintenance of tenements. Its really scary when it happens to you and by now we should have mechanisms in place to help people. glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/2657…

As local media diminishes across Europe, a new movement of hyper-local, community-centered outlets is emerging. Greater Govanhill, a free community magazine from Glasgow, shows how to reimagine journalism by serving residents and challenging negative media representation. ◾️ The @Govanhill_mag magazine was launched in 2020 because there was “a disconnect between how it was written about in some of the mainstream media versus the reality of actually living here,” says founder @RhiannonDavies. ◾️Why print? “It felt important to be in print so that we could get into the hands of people who might otherwise be isolated or left out of those conversations,” said Davies. ◾️Print also offers a deliberate alternative to algorithms. "You might not think you're interested in reading an article about the history of the Roma community... but you might want to read an article about why your bins aren't getting collected. By putting those two articles side by side, you then end up reading something... you wouldn't otherwise know." ◾️The editorial process is deeply collaborative. The team organises meetings where everyone—readers, writers, volunteers—is invited to discuss what’s going on in the neighbourhood and set the theme for the next issue collectively. ◾️The magazine's mission is clear: "To take a solutions focused look at issues that affect local people. We do a lot of listening work to make sure that when we go out to community events, we go to other groups, we go and do stalls on the road, we run our own events, we do surveys, we chat to people as they come into our newsroom door… to keep reflecting back what we're hearing and making our work relevant to people.” ◾️This community-centered approach is often challenged by those who claim it strays too close to social activism. "I remember when I first launched the magazine... I could see some people in the chat going, well, it sounds very nice, but it's not journalism." ◾️Davies pushes back against that notion. "What I've learned to do over the years... is that it's actually okay to go against the grain and to do something different." ◾️"The reason that I do journalism, the reason I launched this publication is because I care about where I live and I care about the people in it. And trying to pretend that we don't care can be quite harmful, in terms of trust, in terms of relevance," she says. ❓Greater Govanhill's model prioritises service over extraction, challenging traditional ideas of journalistic objectivity. In an era of declining trust, is a journalism rooted in community care the key to relevance and sustainability? 📍Read the full deep-dive on our website 👉thefix.media/2025/10/31/grea…
