The cycle of #poverty: can't afford AC, suffer health impact from #heatwave, need costly medical attention.
Record heat waves illuminate plight of poorest Americans who suffer without air conditioning buff.ly/3KgeLLV by @BedaynJesse via @AP CC @kristie_ebi @GraffMichelle
Thrilled that @BedaynJesse at @AP, once again, highlights households’ ongoing and growing need for financial assistance to pay energy bills.
See below 👇🏻
As climate change ratchets up temperatures across the U.S., nearly 30 million Americans are grappling with enduring perilous heat. To keep their air conditioning on, many cull their grocery lists or skip medical care. apnews.com/article/heat-wave…
Heat hurts, and it kills. We need to do more.
I was happy to speak to @BedaynJesse with @AP highlighting the obstacles facing those that require financial assistance to pay their energy bills. 👇🏻
As climate change fans hotter and longer heat waves, breaking record temperatures and leaving dozens dead, the poorest Americans suffer the hottest days with the fewest defenses. apnews.com/article/heat-wave…

The latest @IPCC_CH 6th Asst Synthesis Report comes out tomorrow; but after three decades of these assessments, it's already clear that --
Climate is changing
Humans are responsible
The impacts are serious
We aren't doing enough to prevent them
And our future is in our hands.

Thank you to @rebleber for including me in this article that, importantly, highlights:
“Energy costs are rising, and the programs meant to help aren’t keeping the same pace.”
Families are already “very stressed and stretched” by the highest natural gas prices we’ve seen since 2008 vox.com/science-and-health/2…

As we enter winter 🥶, this is a reminder that utility disconnection protections are rife with administrative burdens, or obstacles, that make it more difficult for vulnerable households to keep their power on as temperatures drop, heating demands rise, and related bills rise.

In this new open access article, we find that the majority of households that face conditions of energy poverty/insecurity, tend to do so on a reoccurring basis. We must think deeply about preventative solutions, debt asst, and implications of dis/reconnection fees, plus more
