Take a train between Wapping and Rotherhithe stations and you are travelling through the world's first (now oldest) tunnel under a river. It was constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and father Marc. The tunnel originally opened for pedestrians in 1843 and railway in the 1860s.

It was at the same time that Indians were inventing the game of chess, which also spread to the West through the Islamic civilisation.
Zero
Indian mathematicians were using zero as a placeholder in the decimal number system by around the 5th century CE.
* The mathematician Brahmagupta, writing in 628 CE, was the first known person to give formal rules for calculating with zero, including addition, subtraction and multiplication.
* The idea then travelled through the Islamic world and eventually reached Europe, where it became part of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system we use today.
