The UK is now looking at increasing the order of Vanguard vessels procured from 3 to 6 to replace the Batch 1 OPVs due to retire next year. "Ocean going variant" could begin entering service by 2030, with interest from Norway, UK and Lithuania. (Src: nordicdefencesector.com/en/a…)

I remember reading this "intellectual giant" of conservatism and was genuinely shocked by just how low the quality of thought was. Pathetic, vile little psued who deserves to be promptly forgotten

👏 👏👏 👏 I'm a little younger than you, but for me, this 👇, sums up our core problem. (Fwiw I thought the Tories should have gone with Badenoch instead of Sunak.)

In 2000, the UK imported just 16% of the diesel it used; now it's 55%. Over that time we closed 60% of domestic refining capacity, & the collapse is accelerating; over the past 2 years we've closed a third. How does this promote energy security?

One question that could usefully be asked is why the government has not used its extensive directive powers under the Energy Act 1976 to protect supplies and build adequate stocks?

Couldn't agree more with all of this by @rcolvile. How we can have a minister whose job title includes the words "energy security" and yet presides over this shambles is quite beyond me.

Cue the usual weary irony. But here's my question: why aren't MPs hauling the people who oversee this farago in front of them & figuring how to fix it rather than posturing on the EU, Palestine etc etc

Interesting that Ed Miliband's latest crisis as foreign secretary should involve a legal case about something as un-progressive as "settlers" drilling for oil. How will he play it? Will he send for J Powell and Philippe Sands? diplomacyandlaw.com/post/arg…

The govt needs to prepare Barrow in Furness for the huge ramp up in nuclear sub production to deliver Aukus. One model they might usefully look at is Thurso, the Scots town that tripled in size to deliver the Dounreay reactor project in the 1950s jonathandrewford.substack.co…

What a wonderful positive letter from the great athlete Daley Thompson. Love the description of Britain as "not perfect, but the best" country in the world. Minded to agree.

This now has all the elements of a classic media led British moral panic which will almost certainly lead to stupid decisions being made. And all this at a time when we could actually do with preserving what military capacity we still have. thetimes.com/article/a438615…

Hey @TalkmobileUK I cancelled an account recently & you have just taken more money from my direct debit (which you said to leave open so I could be refunded). That's either incompetence or theft. Kindly refund it

For eight decades from the mid 1920s till the mid 2000s, the price of electricity consistently declined - even the 1970s, the years of energy crises. But over the past two decades it has rocketed. You might reasonably ask why. What's changed?

I just made a radio documentary looking at why the super high electricity prices we pay in Britain and what lies behind them. So for those who prefer to read than listen, I thought I'd scribble down what it was about jonathandrewford.substack.co…

Amazing it took the Bank of England so long to realise that stopping selling long gilts predictably into the market might ease pressure on yields. (My co-conspirator Neil Collins has banging on about this for years.)But finally it has dawned. Bravo👏👏
