If youβre interested in the political side of this work, I have an article coming out soon w JEH @CambridgeUP : βJohn Owen and the Plottersβ
In the article I look at Owenβs connections to conspiratorial networks during the Exclusion Crisis & argue that he was more involved and that his willingness to contemplate active resistance developed earlier than has generally been recognized.
The article isnβt an exhaustive account of the evidence for Owenβs involvement in plotting, particularly in the period leading to the Rye House Plot. Rather, Iβve tried to frame it as the prehistory to that larger story. It represents part of that trajectory through 1679β81. The fuller case for Owenβs proximity to & involvement in the conspiratorial politics culminating in Rye House & beyond is for later.
It's open access, so Iβll post it here when itβs out.
Just out - a open-access must-read block-buster from the irrepressible Zach McCulley on "John Owen and the Plotters: Conspiracies to Save Protestant England, 1679β81"
