Pfc. Ted Daniels (4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division) filmed this helmet-cam footage during a firefight in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan, April 2012.
His squad was watching over a village to gather intelligence when they came under machine-gun fire. Daniels was the point man, moving down the hillside with his lieutenant, when the rest of the squad got pinned down. He then moved into the open to draw the enemy’s fire so they could reach safety.
He was hit a total of four times. A round struck the tube of his M203 grenade launcher by his hand, knocking the rifle out of his grip and leaving a hole that rendered the launcher useless (the rifle still worked). He was also struck on the side of his helmet and had his eye protection shot off his face. No rounds penetrated his body armor. His helmet cam died mid-fight; he made it down the hill on his own with no permanent injuries from the bullets (he later received the Purple Heart).
