Three bad harvests, input costs through the roof, SFI turned into a scramble, and bluetongue spreading. We’re still expected to produce cheap food and look after the landscape. Something has to give. Stand with farmers or watch more family businesses disappear.

Fire chief thanks gamekeepers — where was their invitation?
Gamekeepers helped tackle this summer’s moorland wildfires, earning a letter of thanks from Greater Manchester’s chief fire officer.
But our report questions why they were left out of a Downing Street reception recognising those who fought the fires.
Should gamekeepers get more recognition?

Why do @UKLabour hate the countryside so much .
That was the talk in the pub last night .
Then I realised I had to call my dogs in from a walk

Labour's minister for the countryside thinks this is a "far Right nostalgic vision of Britain".
Most of us just call it a pie and a pint.
🚨 EXCL: Labour minister claims that visions of Britain based on warm ale, pubs, and black labradors are a 'far-Right' fantasy that 'never really existed’

UK dairy farmers got 36.89p a litre for their milk in August.
Supermarkets charged shoppers around 75p a litre.
More than double. Same milk. Very different pay packet.
What the farmer keeps of the 36.89p?
That figure is what the dairy pays the farmer, not profit.
Full production costs are around 43p per litre. Extra income from calves and cull cows adds about 8p.
After those costs, the average farm is left with only a few pence per litre - and many make a loss on the milk itself. Top farms do better; the weakest lose money.
This is obviously not sustainable. Where possible please support your local dairy farm! Buy direct, be mindful of the options at the supermarket, and bless our dairy farmers!🥛🇬🇧

SFI window lasted less time than some people spend queuing for Oasis tickets. Farmers who needed the money most didn’t get it. Again.
Three bad harvests. SFI closed in six hours. Still 25°C in late September. “We can’t ride this storm” isn’t hyperbole anymore.
Buy local, Back British farming!🇬🇧

We have asked the RSPB whether its published reserve bird records are complete and comparable enough to measure changes in upland bird populations.
Our analysis of available numerical records for 2014–18 and 2019–23 found mixed changes. Some species had higher recorded numbers; others had lower numbers. Missing records, unclear count definitions and possible differences in survey effort prevent firm conclusions about population trends or the effects of management.
We have supplied our analysis and methods to the RSPB and requested fuller data, an explanation of the counts and details of how it measures conservation success.
This work informs our response to Defra’s gamebird Call for Evidence. We believe the same standard should apply to every upland management system: evidence of what it delivers for habitats and wildlife, including the likely outcomes if grouse moor management changes or ends.

Farms are holding back on reservoirs and other resilience work because it would push the value over the inheritance tax threshold. That’s not planning for the next generation – that’s being forced to choose between the farm surviving the drought or surviving the tax. Scrap the family farm tax in the Budget. In fact, scrap inheritance tax for all.

Defra’s Call for Evidence on gamebird shooting asks about effects on Red List species. Curlew has been on the UK Red List since 2015.
That is why we are revisiting evidence we have shared before: a 2023 study found 1.05 fledglings per pair on keepered grouse moors, against 0.27 without predator control.

What an absolute farce today has been.
Yet again, our farmers have been significantly let down by this disastrous Labour government. They clearly don’t give a damn.
Huge thanks to all farmers and agents who have contacted me this evening.

@DefraGovUK's call for evidence on game shooting
The future of game shooting needs your experience.
DEFRA is gathering evidence on gamebird rearing, release and shooting in England. @BASCnews is urging the shooting community to respond giving those who manage shoots, rear birds and work in the countryside a chance to put their evidence on record.
We look at what’s being asked and why your contribution matters.
