Needs saying🕊 I have never seen anyone really talk about the true, biblical Mary- the young woman who actually walked on this earth in Judea. It is important to look at who she really was, not the stylized figure tradition has built up. ​When we strip away centuries of gilded art, painted statues, and exalted, pagan-style titles like "Queen of Heaven", we find someone so much more powerful and astonishing. ​The real Mary was a young teenager (maybe 12 or 14, which was typical of her time) living in absolute obscurity. Her family was subsistence-level poor. Her village of Nazareth was so small and insignificant that people asked if anything good could ever come from there. Her hands were weathered by hard physical labor; her daily life was defined by the raw, grinding pressure of Roman occupation. ​This simple, brave, faithful girl, who had grown up her entire life hearing the scriptures read aloud in the synagogue, was waiting like every other devout Jew for the Messiah. And then, God called her. ​Think about what that really meant in that culture. She understood the cost. This wasn't a cushy honor. Being found pregnant before marriage meant immediate shame. She stepped into a lifetime of public scandal, gossip, and the quiet judgment of her neighbors. The insults she likely endured are hinted at in Scripture itself (like the low blow in John 8:41). The murmurs about her and Jesus never stopped. ​Her true greatness lies in that raw, costly obedience. She accepted the shame. She didn't fight back, demand respect, or exalt herself. She quietly bore the reproach for the sake of God’s purpose. ​Her own magnificent words in Scripture show her entire focus was on deflecting glory away from herself and toward God's mercy. In her song, she praised God for lifting up the humble and filling the hungry, emphasizing her own low estate. ​When I see people bowing down to statues of her wearing a golden crown, or directing prayers to her, I honestly cannot help but wonder what she would think. I have a feeling her reaction would be deep grief and horror. This was a woman who defined her entire existence by her status as a "lowly servant." Her true identity was swapped for a figure of exalted reverence that stands in direct opposition to everything she believed and how she lived. ​I am not saying I know more than anyone else. These are just my sincere thoughts, and I felt I needed to say it.
