Red House in Godalming, Surrey. 12 bedrooms. Designed by Lutyens. £1.35 million. Beyond my budget, but sounds like a bargain.

Edward Seago was deeply tied to the landscapes of Norfolk, where he spent most of his life and settled permanently in 1946 at the 17thC Dutch House in Ludham on the Norfolk Broads. This scene was painted near Winterton in 1950.

Turgenev's First Love. I reread this novella roughly once a decade. Each time it seems more daring, more knowing, more devastating.

For me this book is perhaps the purest distillation of Englishness. It contains love, war, class, faith, the beauty of the landscape and the regret of feelings never spoken. All that in barely 100 pages.
Almost no plot. Almost nothing to it at all. A love scene that never happens. No resolution because there is nothing really to resolve. Memory, loss, healing. Real joy, but fleeting. A painting uncovered as lots of other lovely things fade away. One of best books I’ve read for ages.

Life in a Boarding House, Eric Ravilious, 1930. A now lost mural: one of several painted by Ravilious and Edward Bawden at Morley College in #London. It was destroyed in the Blitz during #WW2.

As an earnest student atheist, Richard Dawkins defined my understanding of religion. Two decades later, I reread The God Delusion to ask why it has such an impact, and whether the book will endure.
Richard Dawkins’s bestseller defined New Atheism, an intellectual fashion whose conclusions look increasingly irrelevant. Losing faith in New Atheism: ‘The God Delusion’ 20 years on | @GuyStagg engelsbergideas.com/notebook…

A fascinating history of the All Souls' prize exam, which tracks the decline of Empire, the rise of the media don, and the confusions of modern academia. I like the 1953 question: 'Is there any value to climbing tall mountains?' alexanderhthompson.substack.…

Excellent observation: 'In his autobiography, Trollope describes Palliser as “scrupulous, and, as being scrupulous, weak”.'
Depressed by our politics, I spent the summer reading Anthony Trollope's Palliser novels about 19th century Westminster It was glorious escapism, but the quality of the writing also threw up some intriguing parallels Wrote about this for @NewStatesman newstatesman.com/culture/boo…

Just seen the proposals for a Colosseum-inspired design for Bath's new rugby stadium. I'm convinced that, if built, this would immediately become modern icon for the city, a mad tourist magnet comparable to London's Tower Bridge.
