ALT We modeled stream temperature responses after implementing 4 different riparian harvesting prescriptions in northern California, USA forest headwaters. Canopy shade (%) reduced significantly in sites with 50% of one side of the riparian area harvested (PRE) compared to control sites (REF) and other treatments (ASP and HCP). But those treatments were small to lead to changes in stream temperature. Seasonal random forest models revealed that responses in stream temperature were mostly driven by changes in climate and catchment physiography.

ALT The hysteretic behavior of stream temperature (Ts) varied across seasons—the greatest HI occurred during spring and summer. The drivers of Ts response during storms are likely dependent on catchment physiography. Ts hysteresis variability in McGarvey streams co-varied with topographic metrics, whilst in Tectah, Ts hysteresis co-varied with meteorological metrics.
