🇫🇷☢️ How does an M51 missile launch work? 🚀
The recent return of high-intensity conflict between nuclear powers makes it necessary to reappropriate the major concepts related to nuclear deterrence. While the political aspects are widely covered, the technical and operational ones are much less so, even though there is an extensive literature on the subject in English, but mainly dating back to the Cold War.
In this new article, I explain the steps of a strategic missile launch from a submarine, such as the M51.3 launch that took place off the coast of Brittany on October 6th. Some lesser-known aspects are explored in detail, particularly regarding the reentry bodies — from the strategy of their deployment by the vector to their arrival on the target — all without compromising any of the weapon system's secrets (which I don't know anyway).
To accompany the text, @CalvaireDrach created the magnificent infographic that we released on the day of the launch.
This is part of a broader book project, which will primarily be aimed at newcomers to the professional world of this field — but not only — and which aims to fill an identified gap for this type of document.
Please feel free to share your feedback and comments on this project, as well as any errors or questions about the text — since the subject combines several different technical and physical domains 🙏
Enjoy the read and have a great Sunday!

🎥 A look back at the HCoC transparency visit to Japan
In September 2026, Japan welcomed international observers from subscribing and non-subscribing States to the Hague Code of Conduct (@HCoC_EUProject) for a transparency visit.
The visit took place as part of the HCoC project implemented by the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (FRS), with the support of the European Union, to promote transparency and strengthen international efforts against ballistic missile proliferation.
Following a day of presentations and discussions at the @MoFAJapan_rblx in Tokyo, participants travelled to Hokkaido to visit the Hokkaido Spaceport (@hospojapan) in Taiki. There, they learned about its existing and planned launch infrastructure, as well as the rocket development and testing activities of Interstellar Technologies.
🚀 The visit highlighted the role of transparency measures in the implementation of the HCoC and their relevance in a space sector increasingly shaped by commercial actors.
Many thanks to the Japanese authorities, the Hokkaido Spaceport, the town of Taiki and all those who contributed to making this visit possible.

📢 As of today, the FRS is proud to announce the launch of the 2nd promotion of the Ballistic Missile Non-Proliferation #YouthGroup.
➡️ For a year, 17 fellows from around the world will engage in a programme of missile-related activities, including one main in-person workshop.
🤝Our kick-off event allowed for the presentation of the programme, under the aegis of Ms Marketa Homolkova the #EuropeanUnion, and to delve right into the issue with a keynote presentation by Mr Vann Van Diepen on the origins of the #HCoC.
