No Society Arrives at Tragedy Overnight
Published yesterday, May 28, 2026, exactly thirty five years after the political transition that inaugurated Ethiopia’s post 1991 constitutional order, this article examines a question that the passage of three and a half decades has made more urgent, not less: How did anti Amhara violence become institutionalized, and why has it persisted across successive political eras?
The timing is significant. As Ethiopia approaches another national election, the article looks beyond the immediate political moment and turns instead to the deeper historical forces that have shaped the present. This inquiry begins not in 2026, or even in 1991, but in the 1820s, with the missionary and colonial narratives that first gave shape to competing visions of Ethiopian identity and statehood.
Drawing on a genealogical framework, the article traces seven historical periods through which the negative political construction of the Amhara evolved, from European racial taxonomies and Italian colonial ideology, through the revolutionary student movement of the 1960s and 1970s, to the ethno nationalist projects that culminated in the constitutional and territorial order established after 1991. It argues that the violence experienced by Amhara communities in recent decades was neither accidental nor sudden. It was prepared intellectually, institutionally, and discursively over generations.
No society arrives at tragedy overnight. Long before violence manifests physically, it is shaped by the stories societies tell, the histories they choose to remember, and the institutions they build in their image.
As Chinua Achebe observed, “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
Understanding how certain narratives became embedded in law, territory, and political discourse is not merely an academic exercise. It is a prerequisite for truth, accountability, reconciliation, and the possibility of a more just future.

🚨 Death toll in Shirka Orthodox Christian massacre rises as residents in neighboring Guna and Merti Woredas face threats of further attacks by government-backed Oromo militants
The death toll from the October 24th, 2026, massacre of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in Shirka Woreda, Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, has increased following the deaths of two additional victims who sustained severe injuries during the attacks. One victim died at Gobessa Hospital on Saturday, while another succumbed to injuries the following evening. Earlier accounts identified at least 47 Orthodox Christians killed in the attacks on Birbo and Chole, with Oromia Region Repelola militia members and allied armed groups implicated in the killings.

Local accounts attributed the threats to regime-backed Oromo militants, who allegedly warned Orthodox Christian residents, “Now it is your turn. The warnings follow repeated appeals by Orthodox Church officials in Shirka, who stated that they had alerted authorities to the presence of armed groups before the October 24th killings but received no effective protection. Residents in Guna and Merti are now calling for urgent intervention to prevent further civilian casualties.

Circumstances before the massacre
1. Dissemination of false information targeting Orthodox Christians
With the approval of government officials, false information claiming that "Every Orthodox Christian is Fano" was reportedly circulated on social media and promoted in mosques.
2. Repelola militia commander requested reinforcements to take action against Orthodox Christians
A commander of the Oromia Region Repelola militia reportedly contacted zonal authorities and stated:
"There are absolutely no Shene (OLA) in Shirka. Those currently causing problems are Orthodox Fano (meaning the Orthodox population itself). Therefore, we request that you send us additional forces so that we can take strong action against them."
3. Former Chaffee (parliament) Oromia official allegedly coordinated with militia members
Abdella Aman, also known as Abdella Micro, a former member of Caffee Oromia (Oromia Regional Council), who was accused of orchestrating the massacre of Orthodox Christians, was reportedly hosting and holding discussions with Repelola militia members alongside individuals known for their extremist views.
4. Supplies transported to the areas where the massacre occurred
Soft drinks and various other supplies were reportedly transported to Birbo and Chole for the perpetrators of the massacre.
5. Speeches at a mosque in Gobessa Town
On Friday, Islamic religious teachers (ustazes) at a mosque in Gobessa Town, the administrative center of Shirka Woreda, reportedly delivered speeches indicating that an attack was being planned.
During the massacre
Repelola militia members reportedly participated in the killings alongside Oromo militants.
After the massacre
Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) entered Shirka Woreda after nightfall. However, according to local residents, the troops remained in their positions without moving into the affected areas until the afternoon of October 25, 2026.
When ENDF personnel finally moved toward the areas where the massacre had occurred that afternoon, they reportedly withdrew in less than one hour.

Ethiopia: At least 47 Ethiopian Christians were killed, and another 18 hospitalized, in coordinated attacks targeting them in the Oromia region.
Surviving witnesses claimed regional authorities collaborated with Islamist militias to carry out the massacre.
Church leaders have repeatedly warned local authorities about armed groups entering the area, but received no serious response.
This is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a pattern of targeted attacks against Ethiopian Christians, who militants conflate with Amhara ethnicity.
This fusion of religious and ethnic violence against innocent Christians and their churches must not be tolerated.
We condemn these evil acts and call for the protection of Ethiopia’s Christians.

🚨 Oromia Region forces and former Oromia parliament official implicated in planning of massacre of Orthodox Christians in Shirka Woreda, Arsi Zone
New accounts emerging following the October 24th, 2026, massacre of more than 47 Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in Shirka Woreda, Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, have raised allegations of advance coordination involving Oromia Region Repelola militia members, a former regional official and armed Islamist extremists.
According to local accounts, a commander of the Oromia Region Repelola militia contacted zonal authorities before the massacre, claiming that no OLA militants were operating in Shirka and instead identifying the local Orthodox Christian population as “Orthodox Fano.” The commander reportedly requested additional forces to carry out what he described as strong measures against them.
The accounts also identified Abdella Aman, also known as Abdella Micro, a former member of Caffee Oromia parliament, as allegedly involved in coordinating with Repelola militia members and individuals described as religious extremists. He was reportedly seen hosting meetings and providing hospitality to militia members ahead of the attacks. Additional accounts described supplies being transported to Birbo and Chole, while Islamic religious teachers in a mosque in Gobessa Town allegedly delivered speeches on Friday suggesting that an attack was being planned.
The allegations emerged following the October 24th killings in Chole and Sole Digelu, where church officials reported that more than 47 Orthodox Christians were killed, at least 18 others were hospitalized, and victims were buried at St. Raphael and St. Michael churches. Church leaders stated that they had repeatedly warned authorities about armed groups entering the area but received no effective response.

Eskedar: What we are witnessing in Ethiopia is a profound moral and spiritual tragedy. Tribal identity has become so deeply entrenched that it appears to have superseded even our shared identity as children of God. People increasingly judge the sanctity of human life through the prism of ethnicity rather than our common humanity. One would expect Christians, particularly those who share the same Ethiopian Orthodox faith, to grieve equally for innocent victims regardless of their ethnic background. Yet the silence of many in the face of repeated massacres of #Amhara civilians is deafening. When the suffering of a fellow Christian fails to stir our conscience simply because that person belongs to another ethnic group, tribal allegiance has displaced religious conviction. That, perhaps, is the greatest tragedy of contemporary Ethiopia.

This is how the Christians of the Middle East and North Africa went from majority to minority. Today they are less than 3%.
In the 7th century, most people from Iraq to Egypt to Carthage were Christian. Our churches, languages, and monasteries shaped the region long before Islam arrived.
7th–10th centuries: After the Arab conquests, Christians kept their faith only by paying the jizya tax and accepting life as second-class subjects.
They were barred from building new churches, from bearing arms, and from testifying against Muslims, and leaving Islam was punishable by death.
Revolts were crushed: in Egypt, the Bashmurian Copts rose up in 831 and were defeated, and survivors were killed or deported. Under this mix of pressure and force, conversion spread over generations.
In much of the region, Muslims became the majority sometime around the 9th or 10th century, and later in Egypt.
11th–15th centuries: Around 1009 in Egypt and the Levant, Caliph al-Hakim ordered churches destroyed, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and pressured Christians to convert.
In the 12th century, the Almohads in North Africa gave Christians and Jews a choice of conversion, exile, or death, and Christianity there all but disappeared.
In Egypt, mob attacks and waves of church burnings under the Mamluks in the 1300s drove more Copts to convert.
In Mesopotamia, after the Mongol ruler Ghazan converted to Islam in 1295, churches were destroyed, and Timur’s massacres a century later shattered the Church of the East, which had once stretched all the way to China.
Ottoman era (1500s–1800s): Communities survived under the millet system, organized and governed through their churches.
Researchers estimate that from 1500 to 1900, Christians held fairly steady at roughly 15 percent of the Middle East’s population.
1914–1923: The Armenian genocide and the Seyfo, the massacres of Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Syriacs, wiped out whole villages across Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia. In Iraq, the Simele massacre followed in 1933.
20th century: War, discrimination, and lack of economic opportunity pushed families to emigrate, while birth rates fell.
Across Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the Palestinian territories, the Christian share of the population fell from 10% in 1900 to 5% in 2010.
2003 to today: In Iraq, about 1.5 million Christians lived in the country before the 2003 invasion; as few as 150,000 remain.
In 2014, ISIS gave the Christians of Mosul the same choice their ancestors had faced: convert, pay the jizya, leave, or be killed.
Those who refused were driven out or killed, and for the first time in nearly 2,000 years, Mosul and the Nineveh Plain were emptied of Christians.
We were the original people of this land, and our numbers fell over fourteen centuries due to violence and intolerance.
My prayers go out to all those who were injured or lost their lives last Friday in the terrorist attack on worshippers at the Orthodox Church of Saint George in Hamoud, Jordan. I express my closeness to the community and the entire country, which is known for its peaceful coexistence and respect between different religions.
