The IRS has proposed rules implementing the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, and there’s some question as to whether homeschooling families can participate. HSLDA President Jim Mason explains why the answer should be yes, based on past cases we've argued in court.

“[It] is a global battle for this idea of parental rights and home education freedoms. We live in such a time and place in world history that what happens in one country could very well, at some point in the future, come and impact us.” -Kevin Boden, HSLDA Director of Legal and HSLDA International wng.org/roundups/a-beacon-fo…
HSLDA is deeply saddened by the tragic death of 9-year-old Maya Thomas, whose mother and stepfather were arrested on multiple charges. We urge a thorough investigation of the events surrounding her death and appropriate accountability for those responsible. This case is still unfolding, and many questions remain unanswered.
This tragedy is already being cited in support of new restrictions on homeschooling. New Jersey Senators John Burzichelli and Paul Moriarty issued a joint statement about the case and Senate Bill 741, which would require every homeschooled child and parent to meet annually with school officials for a “general health and wellness check.”
We share the desire to keep children safe. Cases like this are complex and demand justice. But no homeschool parent should be pre-emptively singled out for suspicion because some parents have committed acts of abuse. Lawmakers should not use this case to impose blanket restrictions on thousands of loving, law-abiding homeschooling families.
The New Jersey Homeschool Freedom Association has issued a call to action for New Jersey residents. HSLDA will continue tracking this legislation and will share updates as they arise.

Homeschooling helps families thrive!
“One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling is the autonomy it gives families: we can decide what subjects to teach, how to teach them, and even how proficiency should be assessed. Accepting government funding would reasonably come with some level of accountability.
The more benchmarks and requirements the government introduces, the more homeschooling begins to lose some of the independence that makes it appealing in the first place.”

Take a look this new editorial by Dr. Brian Ray, President of NHERI, who presents a persuasive case for home education and challenges us to rethink default positions. "If educators and policymakers want children to receive the best education possible, they should treat home education as the default option—not an eccentric one. Why not home-school?" - Dr. Ray

"There's not a single state in the nation that says before a child can leave the public school, we're going to send all the personal, identifiable information from the child and the family over and run a background check" - Will Estrada, HSLDA Senior Counsel

“One of the biggest misconceptions about homeschooling is that homeschool students are not socialized or don’t have the same opportunities as children in public school. I actually feel the opposite.
I feel like we interact with so many people of different age groups, ethnicities, environments, and they get to hold real conversations with adults. They're not just sitting among people of their exact same age. We get so many opportunities to engage and interact."

“Jennifer Welch’s comments were disappointing and saddening. They come from a worldview that sees children as a burden, not a blessing, and that sees raising, educating, and even loving one’s child as something that should be outsourced.
Homeschool families have an opposite view: homeschooling is something we do out of love for our children. We genuinely love our children, love spending time with them, love educating them, and love seeing them develop into men and women who will care for the people and the world around them. It can be a sacrifice, but a deeply rewarding one.
As a second-generation homeschooler, I saw that love modeled by my mom and dad who chose to homeschool me and my siblings. My wife was also homeschooled and saw that love modeled by her parents. And that is why my wife and I have chosen to homeschool our two children. We genuinely love being around them, educating them, and seeing them flourish.”
-Will Estrada, HSLDA Senior Counsel
