What if the foundational metaphor of modern neuroscience and AI is completely wrong? For decades, we’ve treated the brain as hardware and the mind as software. If that’s true, conscious AI is inevitable. But philosopher Dorothea Olkowski contends that the "brain-as-computer" metaphor is a fatal scientific error. True consciousness doesn't emerge from cold calculation in the cortex, but from the ancient brainstem, steeped in hormones, emotion, and bodily chemistry. You cannot reduce a living, chemical signalling system to binary logic. Tap the link to read more. iai.tv/articles/the-brain-is…

Jay Rockefeller, former West Virginia governor and longtime U.S. senator, has died at the age of 89. Born John D. Rockefeller IV in New York City, he came from one of America’s wealthiest and most prominent families. Despite his family’s Republican tradition, Rockefeller forged his own path in politics as a Democrat. He spent half a century in public service in one of the nation’s poorest states and became a leading voice on healthcare, education and the needs of working families. During his time in the Senate, Rockefeller earned a reputation for putting the interests of his constituents ahead of partisan politics. His wife, Sharon Rockefeller, serves as president and CEO of WETA, the public broadcasting station that produces PBS News Hour. Photo by Chip Somodevilla via Getty Images

During Bill Nye's 10-year college reunion in 1987, he went to great lengths to meet with Carl Sagan at Cornell. Sagan's assistant told Nye, "Okay, you can talk to him for five minutes." In their meeting at the space sciences building, Nye explained that he was interested in developing a science television program. "I mentioned how I planned to talk about bridges and bicycles and so on—stuff that, as an engineer, I'd been interested in—and [Sagan] said, 'Focus on pure science. Kids resonate to pure science rather than technology.' And that turned out to be great advice."

I am often asked about a historical profile I wrote of mystic Neville Goddard (1905-1972) in the March 2005 issue of Science of Mind magazine. It appears here gratis. When the piece first ran, Neville was a near-unknown, even in New Thought circles. My boss, a New Thought minister, teased me that perhaps fifteen people would read it. The article brought renewed attention to the mind-power icon, who had died in relative obscurity in 1972. Interest soon surged. Today, Neville is among the most widely read and heard figures in twentieth-century spirituality, abetted by his prescient decision to allow listeners to freely record his lectures in an era of nascent portable audiotaping technology. At the time of my writing, there existed little background on Neville. He was, in a sense, a man of mystery. I reproduce the article exactly as it appeared in 2005—including the photograph, then one of very few available. The piece contains certain historical references that I have since updated. It is followed by several recent links, including my documentation of his death. I hope this profile fills a gap in the cultural “lost years” of the teacher’s legacy. On a practical note: before this piece, I had not written historically on metaphysics. Experience taught me that what you do on a micro scale is repeatable on a macro scale. Within two years, I had a contract for my first book, Occult America. Let that inform your efforts. -M- mitchhorowitz.substack.com/p…
