"People don’t need a savior in shining armor. They need a speaker with scars." An essay about a speech about a toxic healthcare culture. Plus, links to more writing about curing the culture. thecontralateral.com/2018/06…

Read the article. This is more complicated (and, honestly, way more ridiculous) than authors fabricating case reports. This is a journal KNOWINGLY publishing fictional cases as case studies…and getting them cited 218 times!
The official journal of the Canadian Paediatric Society has just acknowledged that more than 100 of its case reports are fabricated. Incredible reporting from @RetractionWatch: retractionwatch.com/2026/03/…

Holy cow! Sometimes publishing ethics is nuanced and sometimes it is quite obvious… 😳
I am an editor-in-chief for an open-access journal. A submitted paper had a reviewer that contacted the author and asked for cash in return for a favorable review. Thanks to the author for calling this to our attention. #publishing #ethics

So true. Admitting an undifferentiated patient is OK as long as we all agree they shouldn’t be at home.
A very senior surgical colleague once said to me ‘I have no idea why we expect you to make a diagnosis in four hours. After several days and multiple tests I often still don’t know what’s wrong’.

My essay "I'm OK" was the most read essay in @hippocampusmag in 2023. This was a deeply personal essay so I am really happy to see that it was appreciated by so many people. You can see the details and get links to all of the above in my latest blog: harrisonreedwriting.com/im-o…

A reminder to not let the fear of reject stop you:
The work that won today's Nobel in medicine (and saved millions of lives) "was summarily rejected by the journals Nature and Science". Keep trying. Journals are often resistant to new ideas.

For generations, organized medicine has reached for scapegoats and boogeymen rather than use its substantial power to fix the myriad real problems in the healthcare industry. It’s sad but unsurprising.
