Columbia economist Jeffrey Sachs on why Europe’s in TROUBLE: “The cutoff of trade with Russia was a heavier blow to Europe than it was to Russia... more than 20 rounds of sanctions against Russia that simply tightened the noose on the European economy.”

I had not expected praise, only accuracy. What we got was a headline which stated things that I had never said—that is, that I simply want Ukraine to “surrender.” The article even went on to say that I had claimed “Kyiv must surrender.” Those phrases do not appear in any of the recordings or notes from our conversation since they were not actually said. intellinews.com/mendel-the-t…

Imagine taxing mobile phone users to keep the wired telephone industry afloat. That’s essentially the logic of a Netflix tax to fund the BBC. The world has moved on. It’s time the BBC did too.

Ukraine is running out of time — and pretending otherwise will not save us. I spoke with @KoeppelRoger of @Weltwoche about Zelenskyy, the war, peace negotiations, and what Ukraine can still save. This is not a comfortable conversation. But it is one we need to have. Watch the full interview 👇 youtu.be/E4-pZhxqm1w?si=grd3…

The US general who commands Nato has said Russia is “not looking for a conflict”, despite concern among European allies about the potential security gaps left by Washington’s plans to withdraw key military assets. Asked on Thursday about the possibility of a Russian attack on the Baltic states, General Alexus G. Grynkewich said his role was to ensure Nato’s deterrence remained credible and that Moscow understood it could not succeed militarily against the alliance. “I’ve watched the intelligence very closely,” the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (Saceur) said on a panel at the ILA Berlin Air Show. “Russia is not looking for a conflict . . . They do understand the term ‘defensive alliance’, and they do understand that we have a number of asymmetric advantages.” We’re leaving the weird world where the NATO General says Russia is not planning invasion and the major diplomat of the European Union is running around convincing the states they need to witch to military mode and economy and be prepared for the invasion. While I think that the European countries need to improve their military industries, I am also completely sure that escalating rhetoric, silly threats, and superficial emotional analysis do not contribute to diplomacy. Make your armies strong in a quiet and sufficient way.

The UK now owns even more Treasuries than the last time I wrote at $895 billion. Scott Bessent, who in his day killed the pound in the ERM, raised the idea of devaluing the treasuries owned by foreign holders in order to cut the horrific payments by the US Government on US debt. Gundlach, the Bond King, has said that this may indeed now have to happen. So where does the Bank of England now stand? We will own vast amounts of US debt with a declining dollar and we will earn even less for holding it. The Bank's policies are just as bad as Rachel Reeves, whom it once employed. Perhaps this is where she acquired her financial literacy.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗖𝗣𝟴.𝟱 | 𝗥𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗸𝗲 𝗝𝗿 RCP8.5 is dead. The IPCC has walked away from the extreme scenario that powered most worst-case climate forecasts. It was never a realistic business-as-usual path. The coal-heavy future it assumed just didn't happen. Pielke Jr. details the decade it took for the community to drop it. But the policies and projections built on RCP8.5 are still around. Read the full article: wattsupwiththat.com/2026/05/…

None too bright, woefully ill-informed about international relations and with no status but in desperate search for fame having opted out of the royal family, Prince Harry is quoted in the Russian press as saying that Ukraine allegedly “bravely and successfully defends the eastern flank of Europe.” It also reported President Trumpt's reponse that Harry does not speak for the British government. In all the discussion about the United States and NATO an assumption invariably made in London - out of perverse ignorance - has been that the Americans were in danger of pulling out if they were not firmly anchored. Thus we are the suitors and must please the dominant ally come what may. In fact, since the collapse of the Soviet empire it was the United States that feared exclusion from Europe once the threat from Moscow disappeared. This is demonstrated with archival evidence in my book Hubris: The Origins of Russia's War Against Ukraine. It was why the perilous policy of NATO expansion to the point of including Ukraine was undertaken in spite of every warning from Russianists the world over and from every government in Western Europe, to the point in 2021 when Putin decided to go to war pre-emptively to decide Ukraine's fate once and for all, with disastrous consequences all round. President Trump's huffing and puffing with the threatened abandonment of NATO for bargaining purposes is unlikely to become reality because the US has too much at stake in keeping Europe on side, not least for reasons of trade and investment. Trump is not the United States, whatever he says. The fond dream of Fichte's "closed commercial state" in Trump's mind will never be realised. The problem for the Americans remains the same as it was under George Bush ('41) - it needs Europe even more than Europe needs the United States - and the problem will be exacerbated if Wall Street takes a dive before the end of 2026.

The Sovietisation of Cuba and the Literary Left of Latin America 1959-1970 Kindle Edition by Jonathan Haslam (Author) Format: Kindle Edition Available 14 March. Cuba is now completely isolated. The United States will any day negotiate an end to the ruling régime with or without the use of force. So why and how did the communist system constructed by Fidel Castro fail? This book explains how a promising revolution determined to spread across the Latin American world came into direct collision with the United States and in so doing turned to the Soviet Union for economic support. In return for this the Russians increasingly dominated the Cuban economy and then the political system. This alienated the widespread solidarity for the régime from the intellectual élite of Latin America, leaving the country not only isolated but also bankrupt.
