"In 1947, after World War II, Romania came to be under a ferocious regime: the communist regime that was imposed by USSR. And this country suffered a lot. During that time, the regime hated the Christians. Churches were closed. Pastors were arrested and sent into prison. We remember names like Richard Wurmbrand, Nicolae Moldoveanu, Teodor Popescu and other men of God that suffered a lot under that regime. But by God's grace, in 1989, Romania became a free country. We found our freedom, and the gospel began to spread all over Romania. Lots of missionaries and pastors from the West came to Romania to preach Christ. Of course, not all were good pastors; not all preached a biblical gospel. But the Lord blessed us to have some good men that inspired us to plant churches." – HeartCry missionary Sorin Prodan Watch the full video about the spiritual history and landscape of Romania on our YouTube channel — "Look to the Field: Romania"

Meet HeartCry missionary Jona Recaman. Jona is a pastor of the Evangelical Christian Church of Pontevedra. He and his wife, Miriam, have been married since 2005 and live in Pontevedra, Spain, with their children. Jona shares: “I had the privilege of growing up in a Christian family. Since I was a child, I was familiar with the gospel. It made sense to me, and most of the people around me those first years of my life were church attendees. When I was 11 years old, I went to a children’s camp, where I became a Christian. The director took the opportunity to explain the gospel to everyone there, and for the first time in my life, I was aware of the consequences of my sin and the condemnation I would face. That fear of eternal punishment led me to believe in Jesus and to repent of my sin. At that time my knowledge of the gospel was limited, but I did understand sin, eternal life, and the substitutionary death of Christ. Despite this, I struggled with whether my decision was sincere, and I feared that my life would prove my confession of Christ to be false. In spite of all this, I had a strong desire to serve the Lord, to serve at His church, and to be involved in ministry. God provided an opportunity for me to get training in a little Bible College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I went there with the conviction that I knew my Bible well, but God used those four years of training to show me that I was ignorant. I praise God for opening my eyes to my ignorance. I praise Him for showing me that salvation doesn’t depend on my decision, but only on Christ’s perfect work at the cross. I praise the Lord for teaching me how His perfect life was imputed to me, and how His grace is abundant. I praise God for giving me a biblical understanding of ministry, showing me the priority of preaching, and the goal of bringing glory to Him rather than ascribing glory to men. God has given me the desire, the training, and the confirmation of His calling to serve Him in His church through the preaching and teaching of His Word. I love the church more than ever, but I have also learned to love the Lord of the church more than the church."

"Soccer is big in Africa..." In the community of Twatasha, Zambia, Pastor Blessings Ndhlovu and Faith Baptist Church are faithfully reaching out through a unique means: soccer. Blessings explains in this short clip: "We are trying to reach out through the youth program, and especially through sports. Whatever ministry it is, it is supposed to reach out; whatever it is, it is supposed to evangelize. It's not just enough for us to be encouraging one another and glorifying God. Yes, this is very important, and we have to glorify God and encourage one another—the Bible speaks of these things. But also, the Bible speaks about evangelizing and reaching out to the community. Whichever meeting it is, we emphasize that they have to find a way and a means to reach out to the community."

In 1813, Adoniram Judson, the first Protestant missionary from America, arrived in Myanmar/Burma. He quickly set out to learn Burmese, the common language, so that he could translate the Bible into the people's language. Though faced with persecution and hardship amidst an overwhelmingly Buddhist culture, Judson completed the Burmese translation of the Bible (copy pictured). The Lord used him mightily to save many people, and many churches were planted in Myanmar. Over two hundred years later, the spiritual landscape remains plagued by Buddhism, as it was in Judson's time. Compounded with the darkness of Buddhist domination, Myanmar’s supposed Christianity is tangled with liberal and nominal distortions of the gospel. Where true believers are persecuted by Buddhists and even kicked out of their homes, nominal Christians are accepted. An indigenous Myanmar missionary, D.T., who has been a dear friend and co-laborer with HeartCry for a decade, explains: “The situation is hopeless. That is the human perspective. But, for us, the born-again Christians, there is hope in God." Despite opposition, the hope of the gospel is advancing in Myanmar. Believers in Myanmar daily live out Adoniram Judson’s hopeful declaration from many years ago: “In spite of sorrow, loss, and pain, our course be onward still; we sow on Burma's barren plain, we reap on Zion's hill.” Our documentary — "Hope Endures in Myanmar" — gives an up-close, personal account from Myanmar. 📍 River Baptism in Peru! "C is the daughter of a church member. From a young age, she was exposed to expository preaching and at the age of 20, she asked the local church for prayer. Afterward, a discipleship period began. We used “Discovering the Glorious Gospel” as the printed material for discipleship. She was baptized in the Pampa Flores River, and we are continuing discipleship sessions on Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM. Since she is a young woman, my wife accompanies me. Just recently, the local church was informed so that she could be evaluated for membership." – HeartCry missionary Wilmer Navarro

“That which begins not with prayer, seldom winds up with comfort.” – John Flavel At HeartCry, we hold it as one of our core convictions that prayer is an absolute necessity. The impossible work of missions can be accomplished only through the power and wisdom of God. Therefore, prayer must be at the forefront of all our missionary endeavors.

Egypt was historically one of the earliest centers of the Christian church and home to influential church fathers like Athanasius, who defended the deity of Christ and helped form the Nicene Creed. Although Egypt remained a Christian nation for many centuries, the gospel was gradually overshadowed. Today, Islam has become the national religion rather than Christianity. How to Pray for Egypt: – Pray that the Lord would raise up pastors who are devoted to the Word and to prayer and who boldly preach the whole Scripture. – Pray that God would use His powerful gospel to stop the spread of Islam in Egypt. – Pray that believers would mature in their faith through the knowledge of Christ.

Pictured: Brother Paul Washer teaching HeartCry’s first field coordinators. To better serve our missionaries, HeartCry now has field coordinators who will work closely with the missionaries in each region. These men will help us maintain a closer connection with our missionaries, better understand their needs, and provide care and support as they labor in the gospel. We are grateful to the Lord for these men and for the opportunity the Lord gave us to study His Word together in preparation for their responsibilities. Please pray that the Lord would give them wisdom, humility, and faithfulness as they serve Christ.
