On the night of the 6th of June the 501st 502nd and 506th of the 101st airborne division Jumped into Drop zones A and C in Normandy. Their mission was to support the 4th Infantry Divisions beach landing at Utah Beach by by preventing enemy reinforcements from reaching Utah Beach and to enable a link up between the Utah and Omaha beachheads.

American soldiers disembark from landing crafts into hellfire and storm Omaha Beach during the morning of June 6th, 1944 in this week's featured community screenshot.
Casualties sustained at Omaha Beach by American forces were higher than any of the other Allied landing sites. Of the over 34,000 Americans that came ashore at "Bloody Omaha," around 2,400 were killed, wounded, or went missing.
