One of the strange things of the last several years is that many self-styled nationalists are hostile to Ukraine and sweet on Putin. Ukraine is the great nationalist cause of our time. A people is fighting to retain its independence against an invader that seeks to drag it back into empire. How do you explain the anti-Ukraine, pro-Putin nationalists? Some people, I think, are simply confused -- ignorant. They have heard from their favorite TV hosts and podcasters that Ukraine is associated with "elite globalism." Others, however, are simply authoritarian and illiberal at heart. If nationalism achieves their aims, fine. If it take imperialism, also fine. That's the best I can do today.
