Street vendors refuse to sell them food. Some mothers even tell their children to 'study hard or you'll become a homo.' For many lesbian women in South Korea, simply living openly comes with consequences. The community is largely discreet or closeted, with many women coming out in stages, trusting close friends while hiding their identities from family members, colleagues, and employers.
