🇪🇺 António Costa, the President of the European Council. • He officially assumed office on 1 December 2024, succeeding Charles Michel. • His current term is set to conclude at the end of May 2027, though the mandate is renewable once for an additional 2.5 years. 🔎 The rather turbulent political past of this so-called “honorable man” in his homeland, Portugal. 🇵🇹 António Costa's term as Prime Minister of Portugal (2015-2024) came to a premature end on 7 November 2023. 🇵🇹 António Costa resigned amid a high-profile corruption investigation known as Operation Influencer. 🇵🇹 Operation Influencer (Operação Influencer) is still ongoing, active, and classified under judicial secrecy as an urgent matter. 🇵🇹 This Portuguese corruption investigation into alleged misconduct in public office, influence peddling, and bribery in connection with major contracts in the green energy and technology sectors is still ongoing. 🌐 The scandal made international headlines when it triggered a severe political crisis, leading to the abrupt resignation of Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and the subsequent collapse of his majority government. 🇵🇹 Throughout António Costa's term as Prime Minister of Portugal in office, systematic corruption was a significant problem. 🇵🇹 At the end of 2025, 10.4% of respondents cited corruption as one of the most important national problems in Portugal. Main allegations: Prosecutors investigated ‘active and passive corruption of public officials’ and ‘political influence’ in major projects. 🇵🇹 Portugese police raided 42 locations, including prime minister António Costa's official residence. Among those arrested were Costa's chief of staff, Vítor Escária, and his close friend, businessman Diogo Lacerda Machado. 🇵🇹 Cash discovery : During the raids, authorities found envelopes containing more than 💶 €75.000 in cash hidden in Escária's office. António Costa later publicly apologised for this and stated that he felt ‘deeply ashamed’ by the discovery... but also nothing more. 🇵🇹🇪🇺 Despite this still ongoing corruption investigation in Portugal, António Costa made a huge career move to the EU. 🇪🇺 December 2024, António Costa succeeded Charles Michel as the President of the European Council, a role he continues to hold in 2026. 🇪🇺 How national corruption still can be rewarded with a top job in Brussels! 🇪🇺 The EU : the ideal haven and refuge for many failed or controversial national politicians in Europe. @antoniolscosta #Corruption #EU @eucopresident @EUCouncil #Portugal #PrimeMinister
