Delighted to share for the first time, the cover to my forthcoming horror novel, CHOKING HAZARDS🚬, courtesy of Luke Bird, the 2026 British Book Awards winner for Designer of the Year. Here's the blurb from publishers Dead Ink (and the pre-order link is in the comments below): Someone's trying to hide a crime... and they're using Madeline's body to do it. As if living with the consequences of her vindictive ex-husband's manipulation wasn't enough to have her questioning reality, strange objects have begun to manifest on the back of her tongue. A cigarette butt. Someone else's tooth. A set of severed fingers... CHOKING HAZARDS 🚬 is a grisly, stomach-turning blitz of a horror-thriller from author Michael Sellars. Perfect for readers who love Grady Hendrix and Paul Tremblay and available to pre-order now! Link below! Support your indie creators!

The cheesiest of cheesy 80s horror, Trick or Treat, was released on this day in 1986. Fast, fun and flawed, it has great FX by Kevin Yagher, a solid score by Christopher Young (hidden among all the Fastway tracks) and it's directed by Charles Martin Smith (AKA Terry the Toad).

From Beyond, released on this day in 1986, has some of the finest body horror FX in horror movie history. It's scary, funny, sleazy and so very imaginative. In one take of the scene where he's on the floor in his football jersey half eaten, Ken Foree adlibbed "Put me in coach!"

The sound effects for the resonator were sampled by the Beastie Boys for Intergalactic.

Just finished a rewatch of Predator (1987) and the FX, nearly 40 years later, not only stand up but put any number of contemporary horror movies to shame. Stan Winston and his team created something truly iconic.

Dr. Giggles, released on this day in 1992, is a ridiculously enjoyable horror romp, largely thanks to an over-the-top performance from the great Larry Drake. This was the last feature film to be scored by Mad Max composer Brian May.

Fun fact: Ted Danson was considered for the role of Dr. Giggles.

Prince of Darkness, released on this day in 1987, is my second favourite John Carpenter film and his creepiest. The screenplay is credited to Martin Quatermass, a pseudonym for John Carpenter, referencing Nigel Kneale's creation. The film does have a strong Quatermass vibe.

I think Nick Cave is slowly turning into Phantasm's The Tall Man.

Virus (1999) is a great horror/sci-fi flick that doesn't get nearly enough love. Yes it's extremely derivative but it's also a lot of fun with some truly stunning practical FX and a rousing score by Joel McNeely. Pair with Deep Rising for a great maritime double bill.

Which standalone horror movie would you like to see get the franchise treatment? I'm going with The Faculty (1998). There's so much scope for a whole series of movies. Apparently there's a remake in the works with Robert Rodriguez producing and a script by Drew Hancock.

Jug Head AKA The Pit (2013) is a superb folk horror flick that avoids any kind of 'hicksploitation'. Rather than having a bunch of 'normies' encounter and die at the hands of some backwoods community, we're dropped right into the middle of said community, into their lives. It's a dark and daring movie, rich in atmosphere, with great performances from Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers, and robust support from Sean Young and Larry Fessenden. I'm genuinely surprised we've not seen more from writer/director Chad Crawford Kinkle since Dementer seven years ago.

So we can have a faithful adaptation of James Herbert's The Fog now. Surely.
‘THE SADNESS’ director Rob Jabbaz is back with ‘CROSSED,’ and the first NSFW teaser looks fucking mean. Garth Ennis adapts his own comic about a pandemic that unleashes humanity’s cruelest impulses. Full details: [dreadcentral.com/trailer/594…]

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (released on this day in 1982) reflected John Carpenter's original premise for the Halloween franchise. Each movie was supposed to feature a different monster or threat and only have in common that the events took place around Halloween.

For me, Hokum has been the best horror movie of 2026. While some (admittedly very effective) horror movies have ejected plot and focused on vibes and 'inexplicableness', Hokum refuses to relinquish plot and demands a rational outcome (of sorts) and succeeds in scaring the sh*t out of us regardless.
